  •   VOLUNTEER COACH
    The athletic programs in all BCSC buildings rely on the generosity of many Volunteer Coaches.  If you have an interest in helping with one of the teams or several teams, please read the requirements below and then create an application and apply to the Volunteer Coach opening.  You will be able to indicate your coaching interests and building preferences within your application.
    Please note that all of the job requirements listed below may not apply to all Volunteer Coaching positions.  This job posting will be used by elementary schools, middle schools and the high schools.  The duties required at the elementary or middle school levels may not encompass all of the duties listed below.
     
    CONFIDENTIALITY:
    Information learned about a student athlete while volunteering as a coach should not be shared with the public.  Any concerns for student athletes should be shared by the volunteer coach with the head coach or paid assistant coach(s) so that he/she can follow the appropriate procedure.
    QUALIFICATIONS: 
    1. Has the ability to take instruction on how to assist at practices, off-season conditioning, skill development, and game preparation. 
    2. The volunteer assistant coach must be willing to gain substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport 
    and, at the same time, assist the coaching staff with new theories and procedures pertinent to 
    the field. 
    3. The volunteer assistant coach must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through 
    his/her instructions and actions both on and off the playing field and in the community. 
    4. High School Volunteer Coach must complete all Certification required by the National Federation of High School Sports Coaching Accreditations with compliance to IHSAA coaching certification regulations. All volunteer football coaches at any level must meet all requirements of the USA Football accreditation courses.
     
    REPORTS TO: The head coach, paid assistant coach(s), and BCSC administration
     
     
    JOB GOAL: To assist in instructing athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training 
    necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the same 
    time, the volunteer coach must instruct and demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially 
    acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of 
    accomplishment in the student athletes. To upgrade his/her knowledge and skills 
    through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc.
     
    GENERAL:
    1. The success of athletic programs has a strong influence on the community's 
    image of the entire system. The public exposure is a considerable responsibility and community/parent pressure for winning performance is taxing, but must not override the objectives of good sportsmanship and good mental health. 
     2. The position includes other unusual aspect such as extended time, risk injury 
    factor and due process predicaments. 
     3. It is the express intent of this job description to give sufficient guidance to 
    function. In cases not specifically covered, it shall be assumed that a volunteer coach 
    shall exercise common sense and good judgment. 

    May be asked to assist the Head Coach or paid assistant coach(s) with any of the following:
     
    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
    1. Has a thorough knowledge of all the athletic policies approved by the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation School Board and is responsible for their implementation by the entire staff of the 
    sports program. 
    2. Has knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations; implements same consistently and interprets them for staff. 
    3. Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels. Is aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance.
    4. Has knowledge of existing system, state (IHSAA) and league (Conference) regulations.
     
    STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES: 
    1. Established the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by staff. Designs 
    conferences, clinics and staff meetings to insure staff awareness of overall program. 
    2. Trains and informs staff, encourages professional growth by encouraging clinic attendance according to local clinic policy. 
    3. Delegates specific duties, supervises implementation and, at season's end, analyzes staff 
    effectiveness and evaluates all assistants. 
    4. Maintains discipline, adjusts grievances and works to increase morale and cooperation. 
    5. Performs such other duties which may be assigned by the athletic director/principal. 
     
    ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:  
    1. Assists in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to 
    scheduled facility times.  
    2. Provides documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent and eligibility. 
    3. Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites. 
    4. Assist Varsity & Assistant coaches with maintaining and reporting scores and team statistics to local media and provide statistics to the athletic director at the end of the season.
     
    STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES: 
    1. Serves as a mentor to each athlete to promote the development and demonstration in student athletes the character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. 
    2. Assist the head coach and other assistant coaches by providing attention to a student athlete's conduct. 
    3. While at practices/games and while traveling, provides assistance, guidance and safeguards for each participant. 
    4. Provides training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete who is 
    considered a participant. 
    5. Communicates with the head coach and assistant coach(s) concerning injuries, medical attention and emergencies. 
    6. Communicates consistently with athletic trainers in regards to any disabling athletic injury that may occur during the season to ensure proper procedures and protocols are being followed. 
    7. When asked, assists with directives to student managers, assistants and statisticians. 

     
    FINANCE AND EQUIPMENT:  
    1. If asked, will assist with issuing, storing and reconditioning of equipment and will help in the submittal of an annual inventory and current records concerning same. 
    2. Assist with properly marking and identifying all equipment before issuing or storing. 
    3. Assists with monitoring equipment rooms and coaches' offices, authorizes who may enter, issue or requisition equipment. 
    4. Permits the athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times. 
    5. Assists by examining locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on general cleanliness of the facility. Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment. 
    6. Assists by securing all doors, lights, windows and locks before leaving building if custodians are not on duty. 
    7. Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use. 

    PUBLIC RELATIONS: 
    1. Willing to help the head coach or paid assistant coach organize parents, coaches, players and guests for preseason meetings. 
    2. Promotes the sport within the school through recruiting athletes who are not in another sports 
    program and promotes the sport outside the school through news media, little league programs, or in any other feasible manner.  
    3. Understands the responsibility for maintaining good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers and fans. 
    4. Willing to help the head coach or paid assistant coach present information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments and results.
