JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Secondary Student Advisor of Afghan Students (with Dari and Pashto Proficiency)
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
This position is responsible for providing direct support and guidance to Afghan students at the middle school and high school while contributing to the successful integration of identified Afghan families and their students. This position will focus on building relationships with students/families, helping them interact and engage in school, setting goals for academic success and achievement, monitoring student progress, and developing meaningful connections between school and home. This individual should possess a passion for equity and inclusion for underserved and/or at-risk populations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of a high school diploma with preferred post-secondary education credentials.
Proficient and fluent in reading, writing and speaking in Pashto, Dari and English.
Strong interpersonal communication and collaborative skills with children and adults.
A commitment to equitable education practices, confidentiality and ethical standards.
Self-driven, committed work ethic, and takes pride in serving others.
Previous work experience working with middle/high school children is preferred.
REPORTS TO: Director of Student Programs
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Student/Family Support
Supports Afghan families and their elementary students to answer questions and provide support about FCPS procedures, enrollment, school protocol, school events and student success.
Will team with colleagues to develop and implement a summer program aimed at serving Afghan families and students with goals related to academic progress, social integration, community engagement and social-emotional development and wellness.
School and Staff Support
Works with school administration, teachers, school counselors, social works and other staff to create a supportive and inclusive environment as we serve our Afghan students.
Assists teachers and counselors to provide guidance and support to Afghan students regarding academic expectations, course selections, schedule changes, personal/social development, mental wellness, and challenges they face to meet graduation requirements.
EL Services Support
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
12-month contract/260 days- this position is dependent on Grant funding that is expected for the 2024-25 school year some time in January 2025. (Specifics can be defined further by Human Resources, as needed)
EVALUATION:
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of instructional personnel.
