
SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER - SECONDARY
Monroe Public Schools is seeking a Special Education Teacher for the 2024-2025 school year. We aim to hire the best candidate and will determine placement based on the qualifications and expertise of the selected individual. JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the Special Education Teacher works to maximize the learning experience of students with special needs in academics, interpersonal skills, and daily living activities. This includes implementing district-approved curriculum, documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes, addressing specific student needs, and providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
Essential Functions
- Conducts assessments, testing, and diagnostic examinations to identify student learning challenges, recommending corrective procedures to maximize learning.
- Participates in PPTs (Planning and Placement Team meetings) and assists in developing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students.
- Assists students and teaching staff in implementing IEPs and behavior management plans.
- Coordinates with external agencies, organizations, and institutions, including state and federal authorities, as needed.
- Collaborates with administrators and other staff to ascertain student needs, including those with special needs, and to familiarize stakeholders with social work services.
- Acts as a resource to students and parents, providing counseling that fosters personal growth, self-understanding, and behavioral management, serving as a liaison between home and school.
- Continues professional development through seminars, workshops, professional meetings, research, and maintaining relationships with higher education institutions and the business community.
- Maintains accurate and complete records, providing student information as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
- Encourages parental involvement in education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
- Assists in the orientation of new teachers and provides in-service training in guidance.
- Selects and requisitions appropriate materials, maintaining inventory records.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Required: Valid State of Michigan Teaching Certificate with a Special Education Endorsement.
- Preferred: A Teacher Consultant (TC) approval or qualifications to receive approval is preferred for this position.
- Qualifications for TC approval:
- Master’s degree
- Michigan Teaching Certificate with a Special Education Endorsement
- Proof of three (3) successful years of teaching.
