  •   Job Summary:
    Under the direction and supervision of the Superintendent and the Director of Buildings and Grounds, the Assistant Director of Buildings and Grounds ensures that all school facilities are clean, safe, and fully operating for students, staff, and community members. The Assistant Director of Buildings and Grounds supervises and coordinates the activities of custodians and maintenance workers engaged in cleaning, maintaining, and repairing school district buildings and grounds. The Assistant Director of Buildings and Grounds is expected to respond to facility related emergencies outside of their normal work hours, and is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  

    Primary Responsibilities:
    • Ensures on a daily basis the management, proper care, and maintenance of District facilities and grounds.
    • Inspects the work performance of custodians and maintenance personnel on a daily basis.
    • Coordinates the distribution of work assignments to custodians and maintenance personnel communicated through the District’s work order system, prioritizing the completion of critical work orders.
    • Establishes and maintains an in-service training program for buildings and grounds personnel with the goal of developing and maintaining their skills and knowledge.
    • Establishes and maintains a system that prioritizes required maintenance and repairs of District facilities and grounds.
    • Reviews applications, interviews qualified candidates, and recommends the employment of custodians and maintenance personnel.
    • Evaluates the performance of custodians, maintenance personnel, and the delivery driver, communicating with the Director of Buildings and Grounds with regard to performance concerns and relevant recommendations.
    • Conducts regular inspections of District facilities and grounds for the purposes of developing a program of preventative maintenance.
    • Establishes and maintains an asbestos management plan, ensuring compliance with outside agency requirements.
    • Establishes and maintains an inventory of supplies and parts necessary for the efficient operation of the District’s facilities.
    • Assists in the coordination and purchasing of materials, equipment, and supplies for custodian and maintenance personnel with the Director of Buildings and Grounds and the Assistant Superintendent of Business Services.
    • Prepares reports and other information to be communicated to the Board, as directed by the Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent of Business Services, or the Director of Buildings and Grounds.
    • Assumes additional responsibilities as directed by the Superintendent or the Director of Buildings and Grounds.

    Qualifications:
    • Five years of supervisory experience in facilities, construction, or building operations. 
    • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required; a bachelor's degree in a facilities-related engineering or technology field, facilities management, project management, or a related field from an approved college or university or certificate from a technical school or college in a related area is preferred.
    • HVACR and/or Certified Life Safety Specialist certifications preferred. Certification in various areas of construction trades and maintenance practices preferred.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of building operations, mechanical systems, maintenance, and construction practices as they apply to schools.
    • Experience in building operation and maintenance in the field of education.          
    • Experience and knowledge of work order and preventative maintenance programs and systems.
    • Excellent organizational, operational, administrative, and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to monitor and address personnel concerns promptly and fairly.
    • Ability to compose correspondence, reports, and/or other required written materials.
    • Valid state of Illinois driver’s license.

    Salary and Benefits:
    • Salary range of $80,000 to $87,500, commensurate with experience.

    Contract Period and Work Hours:
    • 12-month position with a contract period of July 1 through June 30.
    • Work Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
    • Attendance at Board of Education meetings required.
    • Evening and weekend attendance required for some school or District related events.
