  •   GENERAL SUMMARY:
    Saginaw Public Schools ELA Instructional Coach is responsible for assisting in supporting Grades K-6 Teaching Staff with knowledge of best practices in ELA, linking Developmentally Appropriate Practices in Grades K-6 Common Core State Standards. The ELA Instructional Coach would focus on enhancing the teacher’s ability to provide instruction that (1) builds student understanding and skills, (2) is academically rigorous, (3) addresses the curriculum standards and frameworks, and (4) enhances student sense of engagement in and ownership of learning. The ELA Instructional Coach looks at student work and designs standards-based, high-quality instruction. The ELA Instructional Coach would serve as a member or resource for the building leadership teams to align District and building goals and to evaluate student data in support of effective school planning. The ELA Instructional Coach works collaboratively with other instructional leaders to design and deliver professional development as directed. As a member of a professional coaching community, the ELA Instructional Coach participates in professional development and inquiry into his or her own instructional leadership practice. Saginaw Public Schools teachers are committed and focused on rapid school Turnaround.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    1. Knowledge of Early Learning Expectations for 3 & 4 year olds, Quality Program Standards for Kindergarten & the Essential Standards for ELA.
    2. Federal & Michigan laws, rules and regulations pertaining to MIAEYC, NAEYC and ELA.
    3. Knowledge of Common Core State Standards in Reading and Writing
    4. Knowledge and understanding of research and evidenced based practices for teaching in the early years
    5. Attend all required Regional, State and Federal meetings, workshops and conference as assigned
    6. ELA reading experience in K-3 and 4th - 6th.
     
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
    1. Demonstrate knowledge of state and national standards in ELA
    2. Deep knowledge of reading, writing, literacy development in the early years
    3. Previous coaching or teacher leadership experience
    4. Effective communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills for building an environment with a common instructional focus, promoting initiatives and conveying expectations
    5. Ability to design and deliver quality professional development for administrators and teachers
    6. Ability to model lessons demonstrating best practice instruction using both Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP) and Common Core State Standards (CCSS)
    7. Ability to support teachers in the development of differentiated instruction and developmentally appropriate practices in the five key components of reading
    8. Outstanding presentation and facilitation skills
    9. Demonstrate ability to communicate in a professional manner both orally and in writing
    10. Demonstrate strength in organization, communication skills and efficiency in meeting deadlines
    11. Experience in analyzing data to plan for instruction
    12. Demonstrate ability to function as a positive collaborative member of a team
    13. Demonstrate interest and engagement in professional learning and reflection
    14. Deep knowledge and experience in content, Instructional Strategies and Assessment driven instruction (teaching/learning process)
     
    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    1. Implement a collaborative coaching and learning approach
    2. Support and implement District initiatives
    3. Develop and teach in-services and workshops related to the above
    4. Partner with principals, individual K-6 teachers, school sites and articulation areas to implement new and existing curricula and assessments for young children
    5. Assist new teachers, in a collaborative model of observation, conversation, and lesson demonstration, to analyze and reflect on their practice to promote quality instructional practices
    6. Model effective differentiated instruction and/or developmentally appropriate practices (DAP) for young children in the area of ELA
    7. Provide individualized, classroom-based coaching with participants to support them in implementing good instructional practices
    8. Facilitate professional collaborative groups among teachers in which issues related to implementing effective content instruction are considered, current research and writing and effective practice is read and discussed, engaging lessons are planned, and student work and data are reviewed to inform instruction
    9. Facilitate teams among teachers and associates in which issues related to implementing effective content, skills and problem solving instruction are considered, current research and writing on effective practice is read and discussed, and student work and data are reviewed.
    10. Provide comprehensive/balanced training in and across given subject areas and curricular areas, including but not limited to transitioning students from DAP to Common Core State Standards (CCSS)
    11. Participate fully in professional development for coaches, including peer observations, professional research and reading, and inquiry sessions
    12. Assist K-6 teachers and assistants in aligning their teaching with appropriate standards, curriculum and assignments
    13. Work collaboratively and collegially with other Instructional Coaches, curriculum specialists and District specialists
    14. Provides daily onsite instructional and environmental support
    15. Performs other duties as assigned
     
    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
    1. Valid Michigan Teacher Certification required
    2. Master’s degree in Reading or a related field required with a ZA/ZS Endorsement preferred
    3. Minimum of five (5) years successful teaching experience required
    4. Successful Coaching experience required
