    POSITION TITLE:       Special Education School Social Worker
    DEPARTMENT:          Special Education     
    REPORTS TO:             Director of Special Services & Building Principals            
    PAY SCHEDULE:       As per REA Collective Bargaining Agreement and experience 
    EFFECTIVE:                2024-2025 School Year
     
    Qualifications:
    • M.A., Ed. Sp., Ph. D. – Social Work.
    • Current LMSW Licensed and approved through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
    • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) Training preferred, not required.
    • Understanding of the School Social Work profession including laws (IDEA, ADA, HIPAA, Section 504, MDHHS – Child Protection Law Act 238 of 1975, attendance, etc.)
    • Knowledge in MTSS / RTI – identifying research-based Tier I, Tier II and Tier III Academic and Behavioral Interventions.
    • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
    • Compassionate and approachable personality.
    • Excellent time management, communication and organizational skills.
    • Ability to work with Elementary, Middle School, and High School students.
    • Professional experience, in a school setting, preferred.
    • Ability to develop and provide staff in-service training programs and direct support to staff.
    • Experience in a multi-cultural school setting, preferred.
    • Experience in special education setting preferred
    Responsibilities:
    • Experience in differential diagnosis, assessment and progress monitoring.
    • Ability to plan evidence-based interventions for individual and groups of students.
    •  Participates in activities to enhance good school – community relationships.
    • Maintain a professional relationship with school personnel.
    • Fosters and maintains positive / collaborative relationships with parents / guardians of students, as-well-as with students & staff.
    • Completes and maintains student records, documentation, comprehensive reports and record keeping in accordance with District policies and procedures.
    • Ability to complete Special Education and district responsibilities within compliance timelines.
    • Excellent time management, communication and organizational skills.
    • Ability to interact positively with students, staff and parents.
    • Organizes and schedules work in order to provide services to each building to which he / she is assigned.
    • Participates in the evaluation process of students suspected of being handicapped and students currently receiving services. This evaluation may consist of, but is not limited to:  Observation of student(s) in classroom setting;
      • Home visitations;
      • Development of social histories which includes family interview, student interview, C.A. 60 review;
      • Collect data from written behavioral checklists, previously used interventions, consultations with other professionals servicing the student;
      • Secure appropriate releases of information.
      • Participates as a member of the Multi-Disciplinary Evaluation Team.
      • Consults with individual students, student groups, families and community agencies as needed to promote the academic success of students.
      • Provides referrals to outside agencies, as needed.
      • Provides crisis intervention, on an as needed basis.
      • Assists in the development and implementation of behavior plans.
      • Participates in Child Study Teams.
      • Maintains student contact logs to document services provided.
      • Documents and reports Medicaid related services.
      • Participates in Staff Development and training staff in the areas of Special Education, (i.e., Behavior Disorders, 504 Plans, Transition, Staff mental health, Community Resources, and other related topics.)
      • Give support to students both individually and in groups, in the transition process to school, community and home.
      • Work with Administrators, School Psychologist and Staff in developing Behavior Intervention Plans.
      • Assist parents of students with disabilities to understand social / emotional behavior and its’ impact on learning.
      • Effectively communicate, coordinate and collaborate with Departmental Colleagues, Ancillary Staff, Administration, Parents, and Building Staff to facilitate student progress and growth.
      • Function as a collaborative and contributing team member within the School Staff.
      • Perform other duties as may be related to position.

    • The employee must be able to move about the assigned work location during the day.
     
    Work Environment:

    • Work is performed primarily in a standard office and school environment with extensive public contact and frequent interruptions.
    • At times, the employee may be directly responsible for the safety and well-being of students.
    • The noise level in the work environment varies from soft to moderately loud.
    • The employee is required to interact with students, staff, parents/guardians, and with the public.
