What are the major job responsibilities?
The Head Track Coach has track and field expertise and exceptional leadership skills. The Head Coach is responsible for the entire program, from the lowest grade level to the varsity level. All assistant coaches and sub-varsity level head coaches in the program are under the direction of the Head Coach and Athletic Director.
The position begins in February
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Administrative and Organizational
- The Head Coach should inform all staff members of school, league, MHSAA, CAP, and Federation rules and guidelines.
- The Head Coach must attend all training required by the school, MHSAA, and CEN.
- Will properly use Athletic.net to register, record and analyze student-athlete performances
- Appropriate dispense and care for uniforms and equipment, as well as accepting the responsibility for accounting for all such items through an end-of-season inventory.
- Fundraising is a requirement for all programs. At least one fundraiser per sport must be during the season.
Program Development
- The Head Coach should provide his/her staff members with an outline or program of their responsibilities and duties. This includes a pre-season, in-season, and postseason plan for the program. The athletic director should have this for reference.
- The Head Coach should meet regularly with his/her staff and ensure that all information and materials are conveyed to assistants.
- The Head coach should have a vision of development and for lower level athletic programs within the district.
Student-Athlete Development
- The Head Coach should promote academics as a significant part of the program and include a system for student accountability.
- Be an integral part of the school culture, systems, and educational program.
- Provide a strength and conditioning program to improve overall fitness, prepare for competition, and prevent injuries for student-athletes.
Knowledge and Instruction
- Constantly study, analyze, and improve competency in their sport and promote it among assistants.
- The Head Coach should actively seek professional development opportunities.
Communication and Relationships
- Make contacts with other schools and colleges concerning athletes.
- Communicate with the school's athletic director so the athletic program runs as efficiently as possible.
- Communicate regularly with all program stakeholders, including administrators, teachers, parents, students, and other coaches in the athletic department.
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Previous successful track and field coaching experience and/or experience participating at college or university level preferred
- Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport must be acquired, and new knowledge and procedures must be actively sought in pertinent fields.
- Proven ability to organize, supervise, and build a total program in alignment with school culture and values
- The applicant must have a schedule compatible with all practice and meet schedules, including in-season, pre-season, and postseason.
- Experience working in diverse low-income communities, sensitivity to and awareness of the needs of culturally diverse urban adolescents and families.
- Gives and receives constructive feedback appropriately.
- Experience with google docs, Microsoft word, excel, and PowerPoint.
- High School diploma or equivalent. College degree or college credits preferred.
- Effective organization, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Flexibility and desire to work as part of a team.
- Will successfully pass a criminal background check
