Title: Certified School Nurse PPD
Reports To: Building Principal
Takes Direction From: Director of Special Education and Student Services and Building Principal
Schedule/Calendar: 7.5 hrs./day 37.5 hrs./week 191 days/year
Summary: The certified school nurse is a licensed registered nurse properly certified by the State Department of Education as a school nurse. The school nurse is CPR certified and performs the duties and responsibilities as outlined in the School Laws of Pennsylvania and in accordance with the State Health regulations. The school nurse may be called upon to perform other duties in line with his/her professional training.
Essential Functions:
Conducts vision and hearing tests, measures height, weight, and BMI, and advises parents or guardians if the screening results warrant further medical or dental care
Acts upon referrals received
Assists families in understanding medical findings and recommendations and refers them to the appropriate community agencies
Determines that all students are in compliance with the State Immunization Laws and advises Principals on the matter
Establishes procedures for first aid, sets up first aid equipment, and supervises its maintenance
Develops and provides first aid services in accordance with District Guidelines
Writes and implements individual student health plans with parents and staff
Informs staff of student confidential medical concerns and allergy related issues of students
Dispenses medication to students in accordance with District guidelines
Advises means of appropriate transportation in case of emergency or sudden illness to home or hospital
Participates in the health instruction program
Acts as a resource person in health matters to the North Penn School District
Consults with District staff on matters pertaining to the health and well-being of students
Plans, implements, and participates in the care of mainstreamed medically fragile students with special health needs such as toileting and catheterization
Advises on communicable diseases and excludes and re-admits students, if necessary
Schedules mandated physical and special examinations as directed
Coordinates the recording of all pertinent health information in the students’ health record, ensuring accuracy and completeness; maintains State Immunization Cards on every student
Attends workshops and seminars pertinent to the school health program with the approval of the Director of Special Education and Student Services
Submits accurate data for required building and district reports
Examines child with suspected child abuse, reports to Principal and follows through on the mandated District Guidelines
Obtains necessary immunization information and other pertinent medical data during kindergarten registration
Coordinates building medical services and communicates regularly with the staff nurses to implement these services
Provides health services to North Penn School District personnel
Participates in Child Study Team meetings or team meetings at the direction of the Building Principal
Shall perform other appropriate nursing duties as determined by the Director of Special Education and Student Services
Education and/or Certification Required:

Requisite Skills:
Good oral speaking and listening skills for effective communication with faculty, personnel, and students to teach and provide first aid
Visual acuity and depth perception to apply principles of first aid
Lifts/carries first aid equipment and/or teaching supplies which weigh no more than 20 lbs.
May occasionally climb stairs in and or around the building
