Primary Purpose:
To facilitate participation of students with disabilities with typically developing peers in age-appropriate physical education activities or within a continuum of appropriate services.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s degree, associate’s degree, or high school diploma/GED and equivalent wage-earning experience as required by certification
Valid Texas teaching certification with required special education endorsements for assignments
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of special needs of student in assigned area
Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
Student teaching or approved internship
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Strategies
1. Instruct students, using adaptive physical education techniques, to improve physical fitness, gross motor skills, perceptual motor skills, or sports and game achievement.
2. Provide adaptive physical education services to students with intellectual disabilities, autism, traumatic brain injury, orthopedic impairments, or other disabling condition.
3. Adapt instruction techniques to the age and skill levels of students.
4. Advise education professional of students’ physical abilities or disabilities and the accommodations required to enhance their school performance.
5. Assess students’ physical progress or needs.
6. Assist in screening or placement of students’ progress reports to students, parents, teachers, or administrators.
7. Coordinate the Special Olympic activities, trainings, and responsibilities and duties as Head of Delegation for the District.
8. Communicate behavioral observations and student progress reports to students, parents, teachers, or administrators
9. Present a positive role model for students; support mission of school district.
Classroom Management and Organization
10. Establish and maintain standards of behavior to create safe, orderly, and effective environments for learning.
11. Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook. This includes intervening in crisis and physically restraining students as necessary according to IEP.
12. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
13. Evaluate the motor needs of individual students to determine their need for adapted physical education services.
14. Maintain inventory of instructional equipment, materials, or aids.
15. Consult with PE teachers regarding management of student behavior according to IEP.
16. Consult district and outside resource people regarding education, social, medical, and personal needs of student.
17. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
Communication
18. Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.
19. Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
20. Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
Professional Growth and Development
21. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
22. Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education classroom teachers.
23. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
24. Maintain a daily “Time and Effort” log to reflect actual daily activities and time spent on each activity; each week submit signed/dated daily “Time and Effort” logs for the prior week to the principal for signature. Principal will forward the “Time and Effort” logs to the district’s Special Education office.

25. Comply with federal, state, and local regulations related to the occupational area assigned.
26. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
27. Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Direct the work of assigned instructional aide(s).

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment
Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment
Environment: Work inside, may work inside and outside; regular exposure to noise
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
