POSITION SUMMARY:
Instruct students in coordination with a standards-based curriculum and within the framework of district and state content standards. Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to work cooperatively with students, parents, and staff required. Working knowledge of subject matter assigned, classroom management, best practices and strategies, and students' learning styles and needs.
 
DUTIES:
• Prepare lesson plans and activities to deliver effective ELD instruction for grades 9-12 students.
• Demonstrates knowledge of first and second language development.
•  Knowledge of the most current research and practice regarding curriculum and methodologies related to the instruction of English Learners.
•  Ability to co-teach, design ELD interventions, and build positive colleague relationships.
•  Participate in and contribute to professional learning communities.
•  Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments to evaluate students' progress, including state-standardized assessments.
•  Communication with students, families, and colleagues concerning students' academic and behavioral progress.
•  Demonstrates knowledge of and sensitivity to the dynamics of students' cultural backgrounds.
•  Ability to identify English Learners and maintain accurate and complete student records in a timely and confidential manner as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
•  Demonstrates ability to engage in two unique school settings, including communicating with administration and teacher colleagues.
•  Demonstrates effective written and oral communication skills in English and the ability to utilize technology for communication.
• Demonstrates ability to speak, understand, read, and write in languages other than English (preferred)
 
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
Successful applicants must be properly licensed for assignment as a Professional Educator according to the Colorado Department of Education.

 
STARTING SALARY RANGE: (Annual salary schedule based on 1.0 FTE)
WORK YEAR: 187 contract days (district educator calendar)

POSITION SUMMARY:
Supports the academic, social-emotional, and post-secondary success of Newcomer and multilingual students by providing guidance, advocacy, and culturally responsive services. Collaborates with school and district teams to facilitate student transitions, address barriers to success, and engage families in the educational journey. Ensures that Newcomers and their families have the resources and support needed to thrive in the U.S. school system through targeted counseling, academic planning, and community outreach.

DUTIES:
• Demonstrate effective group facilitation skills; comfortable teaching classroom lessons; ability to work with students individually and in whole-group settings; strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to maintain and demonstrate flexibility in responding to changing needs.
• Ability to establish and maintain curriculum to support students’ social, emotional, and behavioral needs as they relate to a positive high school experience; create and maintain cooperative and collaborative relationships with colleagues, community members, students, and parents; desire and ability to function as a team member; knowledge of effective behavior management techniques; ability to case manage; crisis intervention.
• Promote a culture of high expectations, support and implement the District’s Educational Racial Equity Policy; create a safe, welcoming environment that reflects and supports the racial and ethnic diversity of the student population and community.
• Providing a safe, secure and respectful learning environment; communicate student behavior expectations in a positive manner; convey reminders, rules and expectations with consistency and equity, while recognizing the unique qualities and characteristics of the individual.
• Progress toward professional goals and contribute to school-wide goals through professional learning communities, parent/student surveys, meetings, record keeping, and other measures and methods.
• Update and maintain accurate and complete records of student progress and development as required by school, district, state and federal policies, regulations and laws.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

In addition to the Counselor position description essential duties, the following duties are unique to this role:
• Oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish.
• Collaborate and work closely with several teams including the building and district ELD team, family liaison, building and district counseling teams, post-graduation teams, and district programs.
• Provide information and guidance for students and families new to the U.S., including information on school expectations, cultural transitions, grading systems, and available support services.
• Provide ongoing case management for multilingual learners in ELD programming to ensure appropriate course placement and a clear trajectory toward graduation.
• With a liaison, perform intake duties unique to Newcomers.
• Address barriers in accessing career and post-secondary opportunities.
• Include family engagement, services unique to Newcomers, assessing foreign transcripts, case management, and monitoring from intake to graduation.
• Facilitate and lead seminars tailored to the unique needs of Newcomers, providing guidance on navigating the U.S. school system, including credits, GPA, grading, and course selection.
• Facilitate middle school transitions, provide professional learning, and share opportunities such as the Seal of Biliteracy to support other secondary schools and programs across the district.
• Attend local conferences and workshops with a focus on family engagement, resources for undocumented students, disproportionality, and Newcomers.
• Conduct quarterly parent information sessions.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
Successful applicants must be properly licensed for assignment as a Professional Educator according to the Colorado Department of Education.
• Minimum of 60 graduate semester hours for the preparation of counselor, school psychologist or social worker.

• Hold or be eligible to hold a Colorado Department of Education License.

• Hold appropriate endorsement(s) as counselor, school psychologist or social worker.

• Successful completion of internship in counseling, school psychology or social work.

• Previous teaching experience subject area and/or level is desirable.
