    QUALIFICATIONS
    1. Minimum master's degree in education
    2. Tennessee School and/or Administrative certification
    3. Minimum five years recent supervisor/administrator experience preferred
    4. Hamblen County residency required with position
    5. Meets health and physical requirements

    JOB GOAL
    To assist the director of schools in providing leadership in developing and maintaining the best possible educational programs and services

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    1. Expectation of attendance at school system events during school hours, in the evenings, and on weekends
    2. Serves in close liaison with the director and acts for the director during his absence from the school system
    3. Assists the director in the development of the budget in areas affected by staff development, textbooks, and curriculum
    4. Serves as a member of the school board's negotiating team
    5. Serves on various community service committees as deemed appropriate by the director
    6. Works closely with the director and assistant director for administration in preparation of state reports
    7. Works closely with the director regarding career ladder and extended contract
    8. Oversees the following areas: pupil personnel, technology (in conjunction with the director and assistant director for administration), special services, federal programs, career and technical education
    9. Attends all regular supervisory staff meetings and meetings of the board of education as deemed appropriate
    10. Assumes responsibility for all areas of instruction and curriculum (preK-12), providing direction to all supervisors and principals in these areas, which include the following specific duties:
          a. Directs the planning, implementation, and evaluation of all educational programs
          b. Plans, implements, and directs inservice and staff development programs
          c. Directs the textbook adoption procedures and nominates to the director of schools individuals to serve on the textbook adoption committee 
          d. Coordinates the requisition and distribution of new adoption cycle textbooks
          e. Advises and consults with principals and teachers in evaluating and selecting materials, textbooks, etc. 
          f. Assists principals with the evaluation of teachers and makes appropriate follow-up and recommendations when requested by the principal or teacher          g. Upon request of principal or teacher, conducts performance appraisals to assess instructional competencies of teachers and develops written program of improvement
          h. Recommends teaching strategies, techniques, and materials for classroom use
          i. Coordinates instructional improvement plans with principals and appropriate staff 
          j. Secures, develops, and distributes instructional materials for classroom use
          k. Monitors content relevance and effectiveness of instructional materials in terms of established objectives
          l. Orients new teachers in content areas and instructional process
         m. Provides a sequence of instruction and learning from grade level to grade level at the system level 
         n. Acts as resource person for the director, other administrative personnel, and teachers in curriculum planning, coordinating instructional services of the schools to make more interesting and effective use of materials for instruction 
         o. Interacts with parents and resource persons from the media, institutions of higher learning, private schools, business and industry, textbook publishers, state department of education, board of education, and community agencies
         p. Supervises the completion of state preliminary reports
         q. Plans and directs remedial summer school programs
    11. Performs other duties as assigned

    WORK CONDITIONS Normal working environment

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
    1. 261-day contract
    2. Assistant director salary schedule approved by board of education (3% above highest paid principal
    3. Benefits, travel, and per diem allowance the same as that of the director
