Starting Hourly Rate: $22.51 or commensurate with experience
Benefits Eligibility: Eligible for full-time benefits for classified personnel
Work Year: 8/19/2024 - 6/3/2025
Days Off: 10 holidays plus winter break (10 days) and spring break (5 days)
Schedule: 8:15am - 3:45pm plus opportunity for additional supervision of student(s) that occurs before or after the regular 8:15am - 3:45pm work schedule as assigned if needed
Qualifications:
- ISBE Paraprofessional License
- Basic level of technology and understanding of Google
- Technical literacy with the ability to learn how to work within online applications
Description:
This position is for an Early Childhood Special Education Assistant. The assistant will work with a variety of school staff in the special education and general education classroom settings, including general education teachers, special education teachers, and related service providers in order to foster a positive learning environment. The primary role is to assist in all aspects of the daily instructional program for students. The assistant may be responsible for small group instruction under the direct or indirect supervision of the teacher or other person designated to direct or supervise the assistant. The assistant will participate in activities necessary to maintain classroom integration and to support a child’s IEP in all curricula activities, which include classroom and community domains as directed.
Responsibilities include:
- Build strong and supportive relationships with students and staff
- Collaborate with special education staff to organize, plan, and deliver instruction
- Assist the teacher in implementing classroom expectations and positive behavioral strategies
- Assist teachers with preparation of materials, modifications, and implementation of accommodations
- Assist in behavior management under the direction of the teacher
- Participate in student data collection under the direction of the teacher
- Act as a liaison between general education and special education staff to communicate student progress and needs
- Participate in team planning meetings
- Participate in in-service programs and professional meetings as requested
- Assist students in toileting, changing, and feeding under the direction of the teacher
- Assist in safely lifting and transferring students who weigh over fifty (50) pounds
- Individually lift and transfer students under fifty (50) pounds
- Perform such other duties and services under the supervising teacher’s direction as may be related to the smooth functioning of the classroom
- Work collaboratively with the team to de-escalate student behaviors through the use of crisis intervention techniques
