    TITLE:         Multi Lingual Learner (MLL) Teacher 
     
    QUALIFICATIONS:
    1. N.C. ESL (K-12) teacher certification is required 
    2. Certification in additional core content licensure areas preferred
     SALARY:                                NC Teacher Salary + 18% supplement (increase in supplement with years of experience on license)

    SUPERVISES:                        May coordinate and direct activities of paraprofessionals, volunteers and/or clerical assistants.

    JOB GOAL:     MLL teachers instruct students whose first language is not English. The goal is to teach the NC English Language Proficiency Standard Course of Study.  MLL teachers instruct English language learners to read, speak, listen, and write English, so they can achieve grade level proficiency in all academic areas. MLL teachers must be highly knowledgeable in the content and structure of the English language as well as the methodology for teaching English to non-native speakers.
     
    REPORTS TO:       Building principal. Principal is responsible for daily supervision.
     
    PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
    1. Teaches the NC English Language Proficiency Standard Course of Study, instructs pupils in a classroom in accordance with NC approved methods of language instruction, utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education, and other appropriate learning activities.
    2. Coordinates and administers the W-APT/ACCESS English language tests.
    3. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials.  Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
    4. Collaborates with classroom teachers to scaffold and support students’ access to grade level content.
    5. Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instructional time.
    6. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
    7. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
    8. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals.  Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicates these objectives to the students.
    9. Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
    10. Evaluates students’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
    11. Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss student’s progress and interprets the school program.  Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
    12. Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.  Co-teaches in classrooms as deemed possible.
    13. Provides staff development about Limited English Proficient needs at school level.
    14. Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher assistants and volunteers and evaluates their job performance as requested.
    15. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and through self-selected professional growth activities.
    16. Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory; LEP testing documentation and records.
    17. Participates in curriculum development programs as required.  Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
    18. Manages time assigned by administrator to complete LEP related documentation and records.
    19. May coordinate and direct activities of paraprofessionals.
    20. Performs other duties as assigned.
     
    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    Ten-month teacher calendar.  Salary in accordance with certification and placement on the adopted schedule.
     
    EVALUATION:
    Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the Board of Education policy on the evaluation of teachers.
