JOB GOAL:                            To provide each student with the help, counsel, and learning experience he needs to make progress toward educational goals established.   To create a flexible instructional program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with pupils; to motivate pupils to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to live a rewarding life in an ever-changing world. 
                        
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials.  Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
2. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
3. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
4. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals.  Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicates these objectives to the students.
5. Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media.     
6. Evaluates students’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
7. Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss student’s progress and interprets the school program.  
8. Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems.    
9. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and through self-selected professional growth activities. 
10. Participates in curriculum development programs as required.  Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities. 
11. Performs other duties as assigned.
12. Instructs pupils in a classroom, utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education, and other appropriate learning activities.
13. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
14. Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
15. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.

1. Consults and cooperates with all school personnel and Head Start component staff (i.e., psychologists, guidance counselors, nurses, principals, and classroom teachers, Head Start Director, Education Coordinator, social services/parent involvement, and specialists) in assessing the academic, mental and emotional health of children and their families, and in developing appropriate plans for school success. 
2. Provides developmentally appropriate learning experiences in language arts, physical education, art, music, health, and other areas suited to the needs of young children. 
3. Develops and uses instructional materials suitable for verbal or visual instruction of children with a wide range of mental, physical, and emotional maturites. 
4. Develops in each child an awareness of his/her worth as an individual and his role in his family and community.  Encourages children to express themselves creatively in art, music and dramatic play.
5. Provides individual and small group instruction designed to meet individual needs of children in communication skills, health habits, physical skills, and development of satisfactory self-concepts based on formal and informal assessments. 
6. Enriches the educational program through study trips to community resources such as museums, parks, etc., and through classroom visits by resource persons from the school and community.  Shares and interprets these experiences with children and families.
7. Plans and coordinates the work of assistants, family members and volunteers in the classroom and on field trips in order to obtain the maximum benefit from their efforts.
8. Develops activities for families which promote family participation and involvement in education activities provided for their children. 
9. Communicates regularly with parents or family members by means of parent meetings, home visits and individual parent conferences.  Interprets school program to families in order to strengthen parental understanding of the individual child’s needs and the school’s role in the individual child’s life. 
10. Provides appropriate climate to establish and reinforce acceptable school behavior, attitudes and social skills. 
11. Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, interest centers and exhibits of children’s work. 
12. Plans and coordinates with Pre K-2 staff members and Head Start component staff to ensure continuity in services to children. 
13. Maintains professional competence through inservice education activities provided by the project and self-selected professional growth activities. 
14. Selects and requisitions developmentally appropriate books, instructional materials, instructional supplies in compliance with N.C. Day Care regulations and Head Start performance standards. 
15. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs as required. 
16. Participates in faculty committees, team meetings and in on-going evaluation activities. 
17. Participates in the development and administration of evaluative instruments as required by the program and funding source. 
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:           ten-month year.  Salary and work year to be adopted by the Board.
