    SPECIAL EDUCATION ADAPTIVE CURRICULUM TEACHER

    Position Purpose 

     

    With the supervision of the building administration and support from the Department of Special Education, the Itinerant Special Education Reading Teacher for Secondary will develop and implement lesson plans directly related to basic reading skill development through the use of multisensory reading instruction for students with disabilities with basic reading deficits. Reports to the Supervisor of Special Education, Secondary Schools, Principal, Assistant Principal.
     

     

    Essential Functions 

     

    This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge or skills. 

     
    • Diagnose, assess, prescribe, and evaluate the reading needs of individual students with disabilities with basic reading skills deficits to determine level of need and establish baseline data;
    • Implement scientifically-based reading strategies that will enable students to develop and/or strengthen basic reading skills to include: decoding (phonemic awareness and phonics), fluency, and vocabulary development;

    • Provides small group instruction designed to meet the individual needs of identified students;

    • Carry out ongoing assessment and data collection in order to report regular progress on students’ skill developments;

    • Writing and modifying lesson plans that include multisensory reading strategies;

    • Consult with content teachers, special education teachers, parents and students, advising on strategies and activities that have been identified as supportive of students’ reading skills;

    • Maintain a print-rich environment, including a word wall;

    • Communicates with parents/guardians through a variety of means;

    • Participate in regular professional development to improve personal knowledge and skills.

     

     

     

    Additional Duties 

     

    -  Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

    Equipment

     

    -  Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

     

     

     

    Travel Requirements

     

    -  Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

     

     

     

    Skills, Knowledge, Abilities

     
    • Deep understanding of multisensory reading instruction and scientifically-based reading strategies;

    • Possesses proficient computer knowledge and skills;

    • Proficient in collecting, analyzing, and maintaining data in order to report students’ progress;

    • Communicate effectively in both written and oral forms with teachers, administrators, parents/guardians, and students;

    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all stakeholders;

    • Able to lift and carry up to 20 pounds, bend, stoop reach, and stand for prolonged periods of time

     

     

     

    Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

     

    -  Works in standard office and school building environments.

     

     

     

    Qualifications Profile:  Education & Experience

     
    • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in the area of Special Education;

    • Additional certification as a Reading Teacher preferred.

    • Has three or more years of exemplary teaching experience in special education

    • Preferred: three years of experience in the area of multisensory reading instruction

    • Preferred: an endorsement in reading instruction

     

    Terms of Employment:

     
    • Salary Range:  $55,141 - 90,122 ($2,944 Additional for Master’s Degree)
    • Contract:          10 Months
    • Benefits:           Employer Portion Paid Retirement, Life Insurance, Contribution to Medical Insurance, Personal and Sick Leave
     


    FLSA Status: Exempt
