Suffolk Public Schools will be hosting a Teacher Job Fair on Saturday,  April 26, 2025.  If you are interested in attending, please apply to this posting and attach proof of certification (see below). 
 
 
Who should attend?
 
• Candidates who are eligible for VA Licensure and recent graduates who have completed student teaching
• Applicants who currently hold a valid VA Teaching License
• Applicants who are interested in Provisional entry teaching opportunities
• Current SPS employees who are interested in transferring 
• Open positions for OT, SLP, Psychologist
   
What to expect?
• An opportunity to meet school staff members and potentially interview with school administrators.


Proof of certification would include one of the following:
• In State:                    Valid VA Teaching Certificate
• Out of State:              Valid teaching certificate and Praxis Scores

REPORTS TO: The athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals 
 
SUPERVISES: In several instances, the head coach must advise, coordinate and support a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal. 
 
JOB GOAL: To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the same time, the coach must instruct and demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self discipline, self confidence, and pride of accomplishment in the student athletes. To upgrade his/her knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc. 
 
GENERAL:
1. The success of athletic programs has a strong influence on the community's image of the entire system. The public exposure is a considerable responsibility and community/parent pressure for winning performance is taxing, but must not override the objectives of good sportsmanship and good mental health. 
2. The position includes other unusual aspect such as extended time, risk injury factor and due process predicaments. 
3. It is the express intent of this job description to give sufficient guidance to function. In cases not specifically covered, it shall be assumed that a coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment. 
4. The position is evaluated yearly and upon recommendation, will be renewed for the upcoming school year.
 
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
1. Has a thorough knowledge of all the athletic policies approved by the Suffolk Public Schools’ Board of Education and is responsible for their implementation by the team’s staff of the sports program. 
2. Has knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations; implements same consistently and interprets them for staff. 
3. Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels. Is aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance. 
 
STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES: 
1. Established the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by assistants. Designs conferences, clinics and staff meetings to insure staff awareness of overall program. 
2. Trains and informs staff, encourages professional growth by encouraging clinic attendance.
3. Delegates specific duties, supervises implementation and, at season's end, analyzes staff effectiveness and evaluates all assistants. 
4. Maintains discipline, adjusts grievances and works to increase morale and cooperation. 
5. Performs such other duties which may be assigned by the athletic director/principal. 
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES: 
1. Assists the athletic director in scheduling, providing transportation and requirements for tournament and special sport events.

1. Serves as a mentor to each athlete to promote the development and demonstration in student athletes the character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. 
2. Gives constant attention to a student athlete's grades and conduct. 
3. By his/her presence at all practices games and while traveling, provides assistance, guidance and safeguards for each participant. 
4. Provides training rules, schedule, calendar, and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete (and their parents) who is considered a participant. 
5. Follows programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention and emergencies. 
6. Directs SPS Trainer to complete paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submits to athletic office within 24 hours. 
7. Directs student managers, assistants and statisticians. 
8. Determines discipline, delineates procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary and contracts parents and the Athletic Director when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible. 
9. Assists athletes in their college or advanced educational selection. 
FINANCE, FACILITY AND EQUIPMENT: 
1. Participates in the budgeting function with the athletic director by establishing requirements for the next season. Recommends equipment guidelines as to type, style, color or technical specifications. 
2. Is accountable for all equipment and collects the cost of any equipment lost or not returned. 
3. Arranges for issuing, storing and reconditioning of equipment and submits annual inventory and current records concerning same. 
4. Properly marks and identifies all equipment before issuing or storing. 
5. Monitors equipment rooms and coaches' offices, authorizes who may enter, issue or requisition equipment. 
6. Permits the athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times. 
7. Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on general cleanliness of the facility. Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment and facility used.

POSITION:  Boys JV Basketball Coach


QUALIFICATIONS: 
1. Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program. 
2. Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport. (Major sports) 
3. The head coach must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and, at the same time, must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field. 
4. The head coach must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through his/her instructions and actions. 
 
REPORTS TO: The athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals 
 
SUPERVISES: In several instances, the head coach must advise, coordinate and support a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal. 
 
JOB GOAL: To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the same time, the coach must instruct and demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self discipline, self confidence, and pride of accomplishment in the student athletes. To upgrade his/her knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc. 
 
GENERAL:
1. The success of athletic programs has a strong influence on the community's image of the entire system. 1. Serves as a mentor to each athlete to promote the development and demonstration in student athletes the character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. 
2. Gives constant attention to a student athlete's grades and conduct. 
3. By his/her presence at all practices games and while traveling, provides assistance, guidance and safeguards for each participant. 
4. Provides training rules, schedule, calendar, and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete (and their parents) who is considered a participant. 
5. Follows programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention and emergencies. 
6. Directs SPS Trainer to complete paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submits to athletic office within 24 hours. 
7. Directs student managers, assistants and statisticians. 
8. Determines discipline, delineates procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary and contracts parents and the Athletic Director when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible. 
9. Assists athletes in their college or advanced educational selection. 
FINANCE, FACILITY AND EQUIPMENT: 
1. Participates in the budgeting function with the athletic director by establishing requirements for the next season. Recommends equipment guidelines as to type, style, color or technical specifications. 
2. Is accountable for all equipment and collects the cost of any equipment lost or not returned. 
3. Arranges for issuing, storing and reconditioning of equipment and submits annual inventory and current records concerning same. 
4. Properly marks and identifies all equipment before issuing or storing. 
5. Monitors equipment rooms and coaches' offices, authorizes who may enter, issue or requisition equipment. 
6. Permits the athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times. 
7. Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on general cleanliness of the facility. Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment and facility used.   
8. Secures all doors, lights, windows and locks before leaving building if custodians are not on duty. 
9. Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.

Position Purpose

Essential Functions
 
• Develops and administers Agriculture education curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.

Essential Functions 
 
• Conducts assessments, testing and diagnostic examinations of students for the purpose of identifying learning issues, and recommending courses of action or corrective procedures to overcome issues and maximize learning.
• Participates in PPT's and assists in developing Individual Educational Plans ("IEP") for students.
• Assists students and teaching staff in implementing students' IEP's and behavior management plans.
• Coordinates with outside agencies, organizations and institutions, including state and federal authorities as needed.
• Coordinates with administrators and other teaching staff members to ascertain individual student's abilities and needs, including students with special needs, and to familiarize stakeholders with social work services.
• Serves as ready resource to students and parents to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and behavioral management; serves as liaison between home and school.
• Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research, and by maintaining professional relationships with members of institutions of higher learning and the business community.
• Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping and providing student information to prospective colleges and employers, as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
• Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
• Assists in the orientation of new teachers, and provides in-service training and guidance.
• Selects and requisitions appropriate books, aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.

• Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

•  Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
•  Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.

•  Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
•  Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Certification/License:
 
• Must hold or be eligible for Virginia Teaching License in Special Education.

• Bachelors from an accredited college or university in discipline applicable to teaching assignment.

• Successful prior special education teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
 

Terms of Employment:
 
• Salary Range:   $55,141 - $90,122 ($2,944 Additional for Master’s Degree)

Position Purpose
 
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to develop students' skills and competence in business and industry, technical skills, the use of technology, and the ability to problem solve in a wide variety of settings.
 
 
 
 
 
Essential Functions 
 
• Develops and administers technology education curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives; develops technology units to be delivered in the classroom or technology lab.
• Teaches skill and knowledge in mechanics, drafting, electricity, electronics, metalwork, graphic arts, woodworking, or related fields.
• Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
• Develops lesson plans and instructional materials, and utilizes appropriate equipment for subject area; translates lesson plans into learning experiences to develop pertinent sequential assignments, challenge students, and best utilize the available time for instruction.
• Designs learning activities to demonstrate the application of technical skills to everyday existence; guides students in the selection of projects or experiments.
• Instructs students in the proper and safe use, care and storage of tools, machines and equipment.
• Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
• Maintains familiarity with district and Virginia State standardized tests for the purpose of adapting curriculum to maximize student achievement on such tests.
• Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.

• Coordinates with other professional Director of Technology, staff members, and others for the purpose of maximizing the uses and effectiveness of technology in student learning activities.
• Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records; ensures machines and equipment are in proper working order.

TEACHER ASSISTANT SPECIAL EDUCATION

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

Performs responsible human support and paraprofessional work assisting classroom teachers by working with individual special needs students or small groups; does related work as required.  Work is performed under the regular supervision of assigned teachers, therapists or and/or building administrators.

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, and some medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting,and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions and noise.
