    Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a federally funded grant program under the auspices of the New Mexico Higher Education Department to ensure the program’s college and career readiness goals and objectives are met successfully.
     
    General Function:
    Tutors help students achieve academic and personal excellence under direct supervision of the site Principal, GEAR UP Coordinator, and with the assistance of the Math Core teacher(s). Actively participate in the learning, growth, and personal development of students to prepare students to successfully attend college.
     
    Education/Training/Experience
    (Basic minimum requirements are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the District.)
    Minimum:  Bachelor’s degree or evidence of earned college credit in the field of education; or enrollment in a science, math, or liberal arts Bachelor’s program.
    Preferred: Previous student tutoring or mentoring experience, community-based academic support program. Strong math background. Bilingual: English-Spanish 
     
    Knowledge/Skills and Abilities: 
    Passionate belief in the ability of all students to graduate college-ready; former AVID or GEAR UP program participation or experience working with a school; excellent writing skills; Ability to work well with middle and high school students; culturally competent, meaning they deal easily with multiple ethnic groups; strong organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and an ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents. Strong analytical and problem solving skills; demonstrated responsibility and reliability.
     
    Essential Job Functions
    All functions are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures.  Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the organization. Current essential functions include the following:
     
    1. Take an active role in developing the academic and personal strengths of GEAR UP students. 
    2. Serve as a role model/mentor to GEAR UP students by being a lifelong learner, demonstrating appropriate academic and social behaviors, and wearing appropriate attire at all times.
    3. Determine the concepts that need to be taught or retaught from student’s notes and discussions.
    4. Evaluate student binders, including calendars, class and textbook notes, etc.
    5. Become familiar with the textbooks and materials used by GEAR UP math students.
    6. Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for GEAR UP students to follow.
    7. Work with students in any phase of the writing process, such as brainstorming, clustering, revision, and editing.
    8. Communicate frequently and honestly with the GEAR UP coordinator/teacher regarding students’ progress and areas of concern.
    9. Other related duties as assigned.
     
    Salary Range:
    (Depending on education)
    $16.30 to $21.73 hourly
     
    Resources Used in Performing Job Include (but are not limited to): 
    Textbooks and customary academic materials at school sites. Standard office equipment and software platforms such as Microsoft Office and the Google Suite.  
     
    Physical/Cognitive Requirements: 
    Regularly required to stand; move throughout a room and/or facility. Communicate verbally and electronically. Use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl.  Occasionally required to sit, climb, and balance, and drive. May have occasion to perform heavy lifting up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus. Must have the ability to travel to GEAR UP professional development or district professional development or meetings. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and private automobile. Requires excellent interpersonal skills to deal with individuals.
     
    Environmental Conditions: 
    Work is performed in a school or office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Face-to-face interactions with students. Some occasional travel is required for meetings and conferences.
     
    Personal Accountability:
    1. Demonstrates reliability as evidenced by attendance records and punctuality.
    2. Properly notifies supervisor and/or designee of absences or tardiness.
    3. Begins and completes work within the allotted time.
    4. Consistently appears in attire appropriate to the work environment.
    5. Demonstrates skill in the use of equipment including its capabilities, limitations and appropriate/ special application.
    6. Protects the district’s resources through appropriate and careful use of supplies and equipment.
    7. Utilizes appropriate body mechanics to aid in the prevention of muscle strain/injury.
