  The Chemical Hygiene Officer's role is to create, maintain, educate and enforce a written chemical hygiene plan district wide. This is a stipend position in accordance with Schedule D (compensation for extra-curricular assignments) of the Sanford Teachers Bargaining Contract.
Duties/Responsibilities:
• Trains science staff with respect to OSHA’s Lab Standards
• Develops an annual inventory of lab chemicals and a written chemical hygiene plan for annual review and sign-off
• Periodically evaluates “use trends” and gathers and properly disposes of unused/unwanted/waste lab chemicals on a suggested 2-3 year basis
• Purchases appropriate amounts of lab chemicals
• Develops procedures to ensure that science labs are within current rules and “school developed guidelines” including but not limited to
  •  student/staff use procedures
  •  student/staff personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements
  •  adequate fume hood ventilation and testing
  • proper shelving (spill lips, non-metal) and hazard classification organization
  • proper emergency procedures (including posting)
  • PELs are not exceeded and proper minimization techniques are in place
  • staff understands/knows that medical evaluations are permitted if exposure occurs
  • staff understands where SDSs are, how to read them and what to do in an emergency
  • staff understands that engineering should be used first to control hazards, admin controls second, and personal protective equipment (PPE) last
  • adequate spill equipment is in place for amounts used
  • only trained staff/students have access to lab chemicals
