    Lead School Nurse           
    DEPARTMENT: Safety

    SUMMARY:

    The Lead School Nurse is responsible for coordinating the PXU student health services program at the district level and for providing guidance, leadership, and support to PXU school nurses and other school staff who implement this program. The Lead School Nurse will function in accordance with the Arizona Nurse Practice Act, the Code of Ethics published by the National Association of School Nurses (NASN), PXU policies and procedures, and other applicable directives (e.g., the Arizona Revised Statutes).
     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

     
    1. Advise and guide school nurses individually and as a group; provide appropriate support of actions taken and recommendations made by school nurses (e.g., interventions, provision of case management service, referrals).
    2. Assist the PXU administration in defining the health needs of students and in establishing related goals.
    3. Carry out duties related to the PXU student health services program and to the further development of school nursing as a profession.
    4. Continuously assess the current health and safety needs of students and the effectiveness of the PXU student health services program in meeting those needs.
    5. Coordinate delivery of services provided through the PXU’s student health services program and assist with state mandated screenings so that the health and safety needs of students are met.
    6. Endorse and enforce professional standards and laws pertaining to health, nursing care, and PXU policies.
    7. Enhance the quality and continuity of student health care through service as the direct link among students and all others involved in their health care (e.g., community health care services and agencies, families, physicians).
    8. Evaluate the current state of school nursing within the PXU and recommend revisions as necessary.
    9. Participate with school and PXU administrators in planning, implementing, and evaluating the PXU student health services program.
    10. Provide campus health office coverage as needed.
    11. Provide timely counseling, direction, guidance, and instruction to school nurses on health-related topics (e.g., acute health care issues, chronic health care issues, disease, first aid).
    12. Uphold the Code of Ethics published by the National Association of School Nurses (NASN).
    13. Train School Nurses and Health Assistants in best practice.
    14. Advise School Nurses and Health Assistants during medical emergencies and routine illnesses.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS  

    Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:

     
    • Master’s degree in a related nursing or educational field, preferred.
    • Two years of clinical or health care experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.  
    • Demonstrated skill in intervention, assessment and referral.
    • Education and training the best practices related to disease prevention and treatment.
    • Experience in conducting training, workshops, or classroom presentations.
    • Experience in working with youth or families in crisis.
    • Five (5) years of experience as a school nurse preferred.
    • Knowledge of and experience in team building and team maintenance.
    • Knowledge of and sensitivity to ethics, cultural, and socioeconomic influences on the student.
    • Knowledge of community resources and appropriate referral practices.
    • Knowledge of the stages of adolescent growth and development.
     
    License and Certification Requirements:
    • Valid Arizona State Board of Nursing License; must be certified as an RN.
    • Must possess a valid Arizona Department of Public Safety IVP Fingerprint clearance card within 90 days of employment.
    • Must possess CPR and First Aid Certifications or obtain certifications within six months of employment.
     

    IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE THE FOLLOWING SKILLS AND ABILITIES

     
    • Possess a valid Arizona State Driver’s License and/or reliable transportation.
    • Skill in researching and compiling data for reports, presentations, and technical documents.
    • Ability to maintain accurate records.
    • Skill in providing general first aid and medical care, and ability to dispense and administer medications in accordance with prescription instructions and District policies.
    • Ability to adhere to strict confidentiality.
    • Skills and knowledge in computers and various software programs.
    • Skill in planning, prioritizing, and completing assignments with minimum supervision.
    • Skill in writing professional reports and correspondence from brief instructions.
    • Skill in understanding, explaining, and applying relevant rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
    • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and procedures.
    • Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations.
    • Ability to type and enter data with speed and accuracy.
    • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to provide excellent customer experiences, including but not limited to interacting tactfully and courteously with the public.
    • Commitment to create and sustain a thriving learning and working environment for students and staff.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
    • Ability to use initiative within organizational policies, procedures and guidelines.
    • Desire to work with children to promote the school health program.
    • Experience as school nurse in public high school setting preferred.
     

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

    Work is performed in a campus health care office and requires exposure to bodily fluids, blood borne pathogens, and contagious illnesses. May be required to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds
