Position: Band Teacher/Assistant Director of Bands / Director of the Penn Marching Kingsmen
Reports to: High School Building Principal
Work Schedule: 183.5 days or according to the school-year calendar, plus summer work as a supplemental contract
Evaluation: Annually, according to the PHMTA Agreement
Summary: Foster a culture of excellence that encourages student motivation and leads students toward the fulfillment of their individual potential for intellectual, emotional, and psychomotor growth and maturation by providing an enriched band environment that will invite creative probing and the acquisition of the skills needed for students to perform at their highest level of potential.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Manage and Direct the Penn Marching Kingsmen, with tasks including rehearsal planning and execution, resource management, staff coordination, collaboration with design teams, and travel arrangement.
Lead the programming and instruction of multiple non-varsity bands.
Co-teach / Assist in the instruction of the Top Concert Band and the Freshmen Bands.
Teach other music elective classes, negotiable based on the candidate’s experience.
Collaborate in the design and implementation of Band Leadership Development
Participate in ISSMA solo and ensemble contests and manage student entries
Recruit and retain students at all levels in grades 6-12.
Collaborate with the Director of Bands and other teachers for a complete fine arts program.
Assist students in developing habits of independent work and use that skill in relation to planned school assignments.
Counsel with students and provide guidance to those with unique interests or difficulties.
Prepare evaluations, reports, surveys, and studies necessary to foster the growth of band services.
Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the time designated.
Diagnose student needs and plan programs that meet students' individual needs and abilities.
Prepare for assigned classes and show written evidence of preparation upon the immediate supervisor's request. Assess students' progress and accomplishments on a regular basis and provide a progress report, if requested or required, to administrators and parents.
Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, corporation policy, and administrative regulation.
Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
Attend meetings and participate in school functions related to the instructional program.
Require students to maintain orderly standards of behavior in the classroom and on school property and seek support when needed.
Participate in appropriate professional organizations and appropriate professional development opportunities.
Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, Board policy, and the Teacher Agreement.
Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, colleagues, self, and facilities from unwarranted abuse.
Cooperate with other staff members and supporting personnel to ensure a quality learning environment.
Follow other directives from the Principal, the Assistant Principal, and the Superintendent that serve to improve services to the students and patrons of the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation.
Qualification Requirements:
Current Indiana instrumental music certification, grades 6-12.
Experience leading and managing a successful competitive marching band program.
Experience in programming and directing instrumental ensembles of varying levels of experience.
Strong background in music technology.
Availability to work in the summer with the high school marching band for the entirety of their band camp, beginning in Mid-July.
Excellent communication skills, written and interpersonal. Detail oriented.
Excellent work habits, attendance record, and successful completion and passing of all criminal history and child abuse clearances.
Shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
