PURPOSE
Assists special education teacher with students in the Extended Resource Room or Positive Behavior Intervention program; performs related work as required. 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary function of an employee in this class is to aid secondary school special education teachers in the Extended Resource Room (ERR) or Positive Behavior Intervention (PBI) program, assisting in the implementation of students’ Individual Education Plans (IEPs). The Teacher Assistant works with students with a variety of moderate to severe physical, emotional, and learning disabilities and may work with an individual student or groups of students, both in a separate classroom facility or facilitating inclusion into a regular classroom. The position is differentiated from the Teacher Assistant-Extended Resource Room/Elementary position by the age and physical maturity of the students in the program, which may present additional and more serious physical challenges. The position is directly supervised by the assigned Special Education Teacher with overall supervision by the building Principal. The primary duties of the position are performed in a classroom environment and may include exposure to body fluids and some personal injury risk from student behaviors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Provides assistance to special education teachers in the ERR or PBI;
• Assists teachers in implementing students’ Individual Education Plans (IEPs);
• Assists teachers by preparing lesson plans and preparing, modifying, and adapting materials and presentations used in the classroom;
• Assists teachers in administering diagnostic, skills, and level testing;
• Assists students with classroom and homework assignments, tutoring, or other supplemental instruction;
• Assists students with socialization, personal hygiene, medications and physical therapy, nutritional, and related personal tasks as needed; 
• Assists students individually and/or in a group situation, both in a separate classroom learning facility or by facilitating inclusion into regular classrooms;
• Assists regular classroom teachers by preparing, modifying, and adapting classroom presentations and materials to assigned students;
• Assists teachers with classroom activities, classroom management, lesson plans, grading papers, clerical and record-keeping duties, creating and updating reports and files, and other documentation, as directed;
• Performs substitute teacher duties in the absence of the teacher;
• Assists teachers with clerical duties including, but not limited to, copying, inputting records and data into a computer, faxing, text and document preparation, and related duties;
• Assists in maintaining the classroom in a clean, neat, and orderly status, prepares bulletin boards and displays, and maintains classroom supply levels;
• Assists with student supervision on field trips and related extracurricular activities;
• Performs school grounds, bus, noon, and other monitoring and safety duties, as assigned
• Participates in appropriate training, workshop, and in-service programs;
• Performs other related duties as required;
• Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with District policies, procedures and safety practices.
• Basic educational procedures and objectives, including classroom instruction and presentation, preparation of teaching materials and aids, behavior management and modification, testing and grading, tutoring, and student-teacher relations and interactions;
• Basic special education methods and procedures for dealing with students with moderate to severe physical, emotional, and/or learning disabilities;
• Operation of classroom instructional equipment;
• Operation of standard office equipment;
• Operation of a personal computer and job-related software.
Ability to:
• Follow written and oral instructions and observe District policies and procedures;
• Interpret and modify classroom instructions, materials, and presentations to the appropriate learning level of the assigned student;
• Prepare and provide basic classroom services for special needs students, including but not limited to, instruction, tutoring, student evaluation, lesson plans, curriculum implementation, materials preparation, and classroom management;
• Maintain a calm personal demeanor and remain focused in situations of high stress;
• Perform multiple tasks simultaneously, including handling interruptions, and return to and complete tasks in a timely manner;
• Prepare and maintain required records, files, reports, logs, statistics, and documentation;
• Operate classroom instructional equipment;
• Perform basic office tasks including keyboarding, copying, and filing;
• Perform time management and scheduling functions, meet deadlines, and set task priorities;
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers and staff members, and other District personnel;
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
• Maintain student, school, and parental confidentiality;
• Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
QUALIFICATIONS
• High school diploma or GED equivalent required, college or other advanced education or training is preferred;
• Classroom or other instructional experience is preferred; and
• Experience with special needs children is preferred; or
• Equivalent combination of experience and training providing the knowledge and abilities to perform the work.

• Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions, communicate effectively in person, and to hear sounds within the normal range of conversation;

PURPOSE
Provides disciplinary supervision to secondary school students; performs related work as required.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary function of an employee in this class is to assist teachers and administrators by providing disciplinary supervision and supervising a disciplinary program for designated secondary school students. The position provides tutoring and supplemental instruction for students. The position is differentiated from the Elementary Safe School Assistant position by the maturity in age and size of the subject students and subsequent more serious nature and consequences of aggression and behavior interventions. The position is supervised by the building Principal or a Vice-Principal. The primary duties of the position are performed in a classroom and detention room environment, including exposure the physical hazards of disruptive and aggressive students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Monitors designated students requiring disciplinary supervision;
• Supervises an in-school disciplinary classroom, study hall, or other designated suspension or detention facility, including coordinating assignments with teachers;
• Assists teachers, administrators, parents, and students in preparing and implementing a disciplinary or behavior modification plan;
• Assists teachers in removing disruptive students from a classroom, cafeteria, school grounds, or other building area, as required;
• Prepares and maintains documents, reports, records, files, and related documentation of student activities, violations, progress, and behaviors;
• Initiates and maintains contact with parents on student activities, incidents, behaviors, and violations and subsequent school actions;
• May assist students with classroom and homework assignments, tutoring, or other supplemental instruction;
• Assists students with behavior modification, conflict management and resolution, making correct choices, recognizing consequences, and other related social skills;
• Assists teachers with reports and documentation;
• Performs school grounds, lunchroom, hallway, parking lot, and other monitoring and safety duties, as assigned;
• Maintains student and District confidentiality;
• Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with District policies, procedures and safety practices.

Other Duties and Responsibilities
• May supervise a classroom in the absence of a teacher;
• Performs other related duties as required.

PURPOSE
Facilitates communication between deaf and hard of hearing students and others, including school staff, service providers, and peers within the educational environment.

The primary functions of an employee in this class is to communicate effectively and to interpret accurately from spoken English to sign language (ASL, PSE, or MCE, whichever appropriate) and from sign language to spoken English. The position may also provide tutoring and supplemental instruction for students. The position is directly supervised by the building principal. The primary duties of the position are performed in a classroom environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Interprets for students utilizing their preferred mode of communication during the school day in academic and non-academic settings with staff, peers and other students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
• Assists teachers in modifying and adapting materials and presentations used in the classroom;
• May assist the student with tutoring or other supplemental instruction under the direction of the certified teacher;
• Assists in implementing a student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP);
• Performs interpreting duties in the classroom, tutoring, supplemental or special instruction, conference, and related educational situations, as directed;
• Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with District policies, procedures and safety practices.
• May be required to conduct in-service or training classes to instruct staff in ASL; 
• Other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
• American Sign Language (ASL), or other required sign language systems, including appropriate signs, vocabulary, and cultural or regional variations;
• Basic educational procedures and objectives, including classroom instruction and presentation, behavior management and modification, and student-teacher relations and interactions.
• Basic concepts of child growth and development and development behavior characteristics of deaf and hard of hearing children 
Ability to:
• Interpret written and spoken English into ASL, or another designated manual/visual communication system.
• Interpret  ASL or other sign language system into English;
• Adapt signing to a variety of teaching styles, student comprehension levels, and grade levels (K-12).
• Sign and speak simultaneously;
• Interpret and translate classroom instructions and presentations to the appropriate learning level of the assigned student;
• Interpret for teachers, administrators, other school staff, and parents, including in educational progress conferences, as assigned;
• Interpret across cultural boundaries;
• Maintain student, school, and parental confidentiality;

QUALIFICATIONS
• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• A minimum score of 3.5 or better on the EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) or, NAD (National Association of the Deaf) certification or, nationally certified by RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf).
• Two (2) to three (3) years ASL or related interpreting experience is preferred;
• Classroom or other instructional experience is;
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
• Must have a valid Idaho Driver’s license and a vehicle to drive and/or they must provide their own transportation for job related activities. The job related travel during the day will be reimbursed at the approved state mileage reimbursement rate.
• Adherence to Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Professional Conduct.
