The Automotive Service Technician career pathway exposes students to hands-on learning
experiences and prepares them for the automobile technician industry. Students will master
concepts and skills in safety in the workplace, tools and equipment, engine repair, electrical
systems, heating and cooling systems, wheel and tire, and more. The automotive service
technician pathway is designed as a secondary program for preparation to enter the field of
automotive maintenance and light repair. The purpose of the course is to prepare students to
continue study in a postsecondary automotive repair program or to begin work as an entry-level
automotive technician. The automotive units in this curriculum are written to the National Institute
for ASE Maintenance and Light Repair (MLR) credentialing standards in conjunction with the ASE
Education Foundation.

Licensure Requirements
A 966 endorsement is currently required to teach any course in the Automotive Service program.
In order to receive a 966 endorsement, applicants must do the following:
1. Applicant must qualify for Expert Citizen - Teacher License by verifying a minimum of five
years of relevant experience and a high school diploma or equivalent. (Industry-
Recognized Certification Recommended)
or
2. Applicant must qualify for a five year license by obtaining a two-year college degree
(associate degree) or higher from an accredited institution of higher education.
3. Applicant must validate technology competency by attaining the established minimum
score or higher on an assessment approved by the Mississippi Department of Education
(MDE). The assessment must be directly related to technology competency required by the
grade level and subject matter being taught. Approved assessments for this license are
IC3 or other approved MDE substitute.
4. Applicants with an associate degree must have at least two years of verifiable
occupational experience in the past ten years. Experience must be appropriate to the
subject to be taught. - Applicants with a bachelor or higher degree must have at least one
year of verifiable occupational experience in the past ten years. Experience must be
appropriate to the subject to be taught. An educator with a standard five – year license
may use experience outside of the ten – year timeframe. -
5. Applicant must hold ASE Certifications in the following five areas:
a) Steering and Suspension (test A4)
b) Brakes (test A5)
c) Electrical/Electronics (test A6)
d) Engine Performance (test A8)
e) Maintenance and Light Repair (test G1)
Note: If the applicant meets all requirements listed above, that applicant will be issued a
966 endorsement—a five-year license. If the applicant meets the educational and
occupational experience requirements, but does not meet all other requirements, the
applicant may be issued one (1) three-year endorsement (license), and all requirements
stated above must be satisfied prior to the ending date of that license.

The MCSD teacher is a highly qualified instructional leader and is responsible for teaching skills and
concepts within specified course content. The teacher will have specific responsibility for supervising
students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans and delivering group
and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other
teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues;
and responding to a wide range of inquiries from students’ parents or guardians regarding instructional
program and student progress.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
• Hold at least an active/valid Class “A” teaching license issued by the Mississippi Department of
Education and endorsed in the field of instruction to which he/she is assigned
• Meet all other qualifications/requirements as established by the school district.

• Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills
• Proficient in basic computer applications in a professional capacity

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The teacher shall:
A. Provide learning experiences for students commensurate with their ability and interest and which
promote high expectations for all students.
B. Develop written lesson plans containing specific performance objectives based on the current
Common Core State Standards curriculum framework.
C. Monitor student performance by becoming thoroughly familiar with the student’s records and utilizing
test data to improve instruction.
D. Administer and develop subject specific assessments for the purpose of assessing student
competency levels and/or developing individual lesson plans.
E. Demonstrate and differentiate methods required to perform classroom and/or specific assignments for
the purpose of providing an effective program that addresses individual student needs.
F. Provide a safe, orderly atmosphere conducive to learning.
G. Develop and maintain a classroom discipline plan in keeping with MCSD policies and procedures.
H. Be responsible for active supervision of students inside and outside the classroom (e.g. classroom,
playground, hallways, restrooms, field trips, bus loading zones, etc.) as required by MCSD policy.
I. Report and respond to incidents and situations (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected
substance abuse, harassment, bullying, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students,
providing a positive learning environment and adhering to state and local policies.
J. Assist in selecting resources, supplies, materials, textbooks, and equipment to enhance learning.
K. Participate in professional and staff development activities.
L. Cooperate with local and district staff in planning and implementing system-wide goals and objectives.
M. Attend regular and called faculty meetings.
N. Keep accurate records and provide students with timely feedback on completed assignments.
O. Upgrade teaching certificate as required by state certification standards and local policy.
P. Be punctual and conscientious in school attendance and participate in school related and athletic
functions as assigned by the principal.
Q. Clear any absence, as far in advance as possible, with the principal or his/her designee.
R. Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules and regulations, administrative procedures, and School
board policies.
S. Effectively communicate with parents and students and provide timely feedback on course
assignments and requirements.
T. Assist in the continuing development of subject area curriculum objectives.
U. Make provision for being available to students and parents for education related purposes outside the
instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
V. Be cognizant of the rules and regulations, policies, and procedures governing special education
programs within the school district. Be knowledgeable of the district’s curriculum, Mississippi Common
Core State Standards, Pacing Guides, and the Mississippi assessment System in his/her subject area(s).
W. Participate cooperatively in the supervision-evaluation process (MSTAR) for the purpose of improving
instruction and student achievement.
X. Assist other teachers in the instructional improvement process.
Y. Work collegially with other teachers in the sharing of ideas and skills.
Z. Participate with all State and District testing as assigned.
AA. Direct assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student
workers for the purpose of providing an effective classroom program.
BB. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the principal, in order to contribute to an effective school operation.
