The MCSD social emotional counselor will help students overcome problems thal impede their
daily life and learning. The counselor will guide, assess, listen, and lend support to students
who will need services beyond the scope of the regular classroom.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
Hold at least an active/valid Class "AA" teaching license issued by the Mississippi
Department of Education and endorsed in the appropriate areas (Preferred)
Meet all other qualifications/requirements as established by the school district and
Mississippi Department of Education. Demonstrate strong knowledge of the counseling area r Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills. Proficient in basic computer applications in a professional capacity
REPORTS TO:
Principal and/or his/her Designee
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:
The social emotional counselor is responsible for student support including but not limited
to the following:
A. lndividual planning a\/areness of self-concept, learning style, interpersonal skills,
decision making, and personal responsibility.
B. Responsive Services including consultation with parents and school staff, referral to
appropriate school or community- based programs, and facilitation of individual or
peer-focused confl icl resol ution.
C. Assist students and staff in understanding and seeking solutions to social, emotional,
or academic problems and issues.
D. Serving as a resource pertaining to student behavior management strategies, and
welfare and attendance problems and concerns.
E. Provide group and individual counseling as needed.
F. Continually monitor student records to intercept and address poor grades' low
attendance, failure to be promoted, and classroom disengagement.
G. Refer children, with parenUguardian knowledge and permission, with suspected
emotional and/or psychological problems to qualified personnel and/or mental
health resources for assistance.
H. Comply with response management as outlined in the MS Counseling Model
l. Providing counseling services and assisting teachers with students who are
habitual disciDline oroblems. J. Be responsible for active supervision of students (e.9. classroom, playground,
hallways, restrooms, fieldtrips, bus loading zones, etc.) as required by MCSD policy.
K. Report and respond to incidents and situations (e.9. fights, suspected child abuse,
suspected substance abuse, harassment, bullying, etc.) for the purpose of
maintaining personal safety of students. providing a positive learning environment
and adhering to state and local policies.
L. Participate in professional and staff development activities.
M. Cooperate with local and district staff in planning and implementing system-wide
goals and objec'tives.
N. Attend regular and called faculty meetings.
O. Upgrade teachingy'counseling certificate as required by state certificetion standards
and local policy.
P. Be punctual and conscientious in school attendance and participate in schoo
related and athletic func{ions as assigned by the principal.
Q. Clear any absence, as far in advance as possible, with the principal or hisiher
designee.
R. Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules and regulations, administrative
procedures, and School board policies.
S. Work collegially with other teachers and staff in the sharing of ideas and skills.
T. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the principal, in order to
contribute to an effective school operation.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
FSLA Status: Exempt o To be employed 2O7 days Per Year . Salary is established by Board policy .
EVALUATION:
Performance in this position will be evaluated by the Principal in accordance with
provisions of the MCSD Policies.
