Position Description
POSITION TITLE: Assistant Director of Special Services

Department: Special Services
Reports To: Director of Special Services
Days/Hours: 240 Days / 7.5 hours per day
Salary: Based on the Admin D240 Salary Schedule

SUMMARY: The Assistant Director of Special Services is responsible for supporting all
aspects of special education programming for students with disabilities, working closely with
the Director of Special Services to oversee, coordinate, and enhance operations to ensure and
maximize student success.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
⇒ Assists with the coordination and supervision of special services programs and personnel,
including special education teachers, paraprofessionals, and related service providers.
⇒ Implements and regularly reviews policies related to special services, ensuring compliance
with standards, regulations, state/federal laws, and district guidelines.
⇒ Coordinates departmental operations with other school district departments and serves on
administrative committees as needed, facilitating collaboration among stakeholders.
⇒ Conducts regular meetings with professional staff and other interested parties and provides
opportunities for professional development.
⇒ Assists in the development and management of the department’s budget, ensuring that
financial resources are allocated effectively to meet program needs and objectives.
⇒ Participates in special consultations and/or IEP meetings with school psychologists, special
services personnel, building administrators, teachers, and parents.
⇒ Assists special education teachers and support personnel in areas related to child
development, behavior, instruction, and compliance.
⇒ Acts as a liaison between schools and community agencies, special schools, medical
professionals, and other resources offering specialized services.
⇒ Participates in state and regional meetings to keep abreast of new developments and
improve service delivery and supports within the district.

⇒ Assists in the coordination of district and state level initiatives aimed at improving
outcomes for at-risk students and students with disabilities.
⇒ Utilizes data-based decision-making to examine the effectiveness of instructional,
functional, and behavioral programs as well as administrative policies and procedures.
⇒ Supervises the maintenance of student records and the completion of all required reports.
⇒ Serves as a resource for parents of students with disabilities.
⇒ Performs other such tasks and assumes other such responsibilities as may from time to time
be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists with the supervision of special education teachers and paraprofessionals (in conjunction
with respective principals); special services and psychological services staff; related service
providers; and secretaries for the Special Services Department.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Must have a valid teaching certificate, at least five years successful experience in public school
work either as a teacher or in psychological services, testing, guidance, and/or administration,
and a Master’s degree in one or more of the areas above.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and
legal documents. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
Ability to effectively present information to administrators, top management, public
groups/community, and Board of Education.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical
situations. Ability to analyze student data in spreadsheets and software programs.

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Must have experience in or have knowledge of the various disability classifications, procedures
for identifying these conditions, and program alternatives. Ability to develop effective working
relationships with students, staff, and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly
and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all
district requirements and the Board of Education policies.
