Position: Behavior Support Assistant
Location: Emerald High School
Job Overview: The Behavior Support Assistant will provide individualized support and therapeutic services to students to promote their emotional, cognitive, behavioral, language, and social development. This role requires a consistent application of behavior management strategies and communication techniques while ensuring the safety and well-being of the student throughout the school day.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide personalized therapy aimed at enhancing student skills in emotional, cognitive, behavioral, language, and interpersonal development.
- Consistently apply behavior management, communication, and reinforcement techniques as outlined in the student’s individualized plan.
- Complete daily documentation and data collection accurately and timely.
- Support students in mastering the material or skills outlined in their Individualized Education Program (IEP) or treatment plan.
- Collaborate with teachers to create strategies for reinforcing skills, tailored to the student’s needs, interests, and abilities.
- Assist students in utilizing equipment or instructional materials as needed.
- Guide independent study, enrichment, and remedial activities as directed by the teacher.
- Support student supervision during emergency drills, assemblies, recess, and field trips.
- Supervise and assist the assigned student at all times, including during transitions and lunch periods, as specified in the student’s IEP.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical behavior standards as expected of professional educators.
- Participate in in-service training and professional development programs.
Supervision Responsibilities:
- Supervise assigned students during school hours and activities.

Education and Experience:
- A minimum of 60 semester hours of postsecondary education, an associate’s degree, or successful completion of the ParaProfessional Test.
Language Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret educational materials, procedures, and regulations.
- Ability to write simple reports and correspondence.
- Ability to effectively communicate with students and staff in both one-on-one and small group settings.
Mathematical Skills:
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Basic understanding of algebra and geometry is helpful.
Reasoning Skills:
- Ability to apply common sense to follow detailed instructions, both written and verbal.
- Ability to solve problems involving simple variables and standardized situations.
Other Skills and Abilities:
- Strong interpersonal skills to build effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community.
- Clear and concise communication skills, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to perform duties in accordance with district requirements and Board of Education policies.
