  •   Assistant Director of Special Education is a full-time benefitted position. This position is for the 2025-2026 school year.

    FLSA Status: Exempt   
    Reports to:   Director of Special Education 
    Supervises:  Related Services Personnel
     
    Position Objective
    The Assistant Director of Special Education will provide professional development, supervision, and coordination for special education programs and interpret these programs to school personnel, parents, and community.
     
    Essential Functions
    • Assist in preparation of required state and federal reports.
    • Assist in the selection, evaluation, and assignment of special education teachers.
    • Coordinate CPI training for district administrators and staff members.
    • Coordinate homebound services.
    • Ensure that all federal and state guidelines for students with disabilities are met.
    • Ensure that all IEP procedures and annual reviews of students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) are conducted within mandated timelines.
    • Evaluate and support related services personnel.
    • Participate in the development of IEPs for students eligible for special services.
    • Provide professional development relating to the IEP process for district staff, special education initiatives, and implementation of related programs.
    • Oversee the operations of ECE and Bright Futures preschool programs.
    • Manage transition of students from the Illinois Early Intervention program.
    • Supervise the entrance and exit of students according to adopted special education criteria.
    • Work with school personnel to place students in special education programs according to state-approved procedures.
    • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Special Education.
     
    Knowledge and Critical Skills:
    • Ability to create, develop, and implement professional development for staff
    • Knowledge of special education law
    • Ability to coordinate and work collaboratively with all stakeholders
    • Demonstrate strong communication and public relations skills
    • Ability to understand school reports and records
    Environmental Conditions:
    • General office environment
    • General education classrooms
    • Special education learning environments 
    Physical Demands:
    • Light lifting may be required
    • Travel to and from school and/or meeting sites required by personal vehicle

    Terms of Employment:
    215 Days Annually

    Evaluation:
    Primary evaluator will be the Director of Special Education

    Qualifications:
    • Valid Professional Educator License in Administration and/or Director of Special Education certification
    • Five years of previous special education services or classroom experience required
    • Illinois LBS1 endorsement preferred
    • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and document work productivity
    • Familiarity with community agencies and services
