JOB PURPOSE
 
Position is responsible for operating a school bus and transporting school-aged children and other authorized personnel safely and efficiently over specified routes to and from schools and various activities. Position conducts pre-trip inspections; observes safety regulations and policies; enforces student discipline on the bus; and performs related work.  Reports to the Transportation Supervisor.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Checks with the dispatcher or transportation supervisor for any changes in normal duties or new student passengers.
 
Ensures that the bus can be operated safely before driving and conducts pre-trip safety inspections as required by federal
and state laws to include observing visual defects and checking operating systems to include brakes, horn, lights, emergency flashers, emergency exits, eight-way lighting system, stop arm, crossing gate, wheelchair lift (if equipped) and door-opening devices.
 
Operates a bus safely over an assigned route that has been designated by the School District and approved by State Department of Education, picking up and delivering only authorized students at assigned bus stops, and watches to ensure that no one hurrying for the bus is left behind.
 
Keeps assigned time schedules, which may require driving during pre-daylight and dusk periods, and makes every effort to be on time while ensuring safety.
 
Obeys all traffic laws and transportation practices as outlined in the Commercial Drivers License Manual, South Carolina School Bus Driver Handbook, Transportation Department Handbook, school board policy and local ordinances.
 
Observes all safety regulations for school buses and keeps all emergency exits clear of obstructions.
 
Safely and properly secures wheelchairs, car seats, and other specialized equipment on the bus as needed.
 
Maintains student discipline on the bus and enforces rules governing student conduct. Reports student misconduct to school staff using designated incident report forms in accordance Transportation Department Handbook and the School District Code of Student Conduct.
 
Accurately maintains and provide written reports to transportation/school staff as needed/upon request on bus route description, road hazards, bus incidents, student seating chart, mileage and time sheets.
 
Conducts bi-annual bus evacuation drills as required by the State Department of Education and implements evacuations as required in an emergency to include safely exiting from the school bus.
 
Reports all accidents immediately, requesting police or ambulance service as needed; assists injured persons until services arrive; and completes required accident reports.
 
Notifies the proper authority in cases of mechanical failure, safety deficiencies, when off schedule, or other incidents.
 
Regulates heating, cooling, and ventilating equipment provided on the bus for the comfort of passengers.
 
Drives students and teachers on field trips, extracurricular activities, and other special events, often in evenings and at night, as assigned.
 
Exercises responsible leadership and appropriate behavior when on authorized trips.
 
Returns the bus to the assigned bus lot, performs a final inspection, and secures the bus according to procedures.
 
Participates in all required training.
 
Submits to drug and alcohol testing as required by law.
 
Maintains a Commercial Driver’s License, Department of Transportation Physical Certification and South Carolina School Bus Driver Certificate as required by law.
 
Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
 
Keeps the assigned bus clean.
 
Maintains an assigned seating chart.
 
Reports all safety violations to include co-workers/personnel suspected of drinking alcohol or under the influence of drugs (to include over-the-counter drugs) while working.
 
Performs any other related duties as required.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Must have the ability to read, write and speak English in a clear, concise manner.
• Have no more than four (4) current points against his or her motor vehicle record (MVR) at the Department of Motor Vehicles.
• Have had no more than four (4) points against his or her driver’s license in the previous twelve months.
• Have not had his or her driver’s license suspended for a moving violation within the previous twelve (12) months.
• Have at least twelve (12) months of driving experience.
• Submit to and pass employment, safety, motor vehicle record (MVR), criminal background and sexual offender background checks.
• Submit to and pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
• Must possess or can obtain a valid US Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certificate prior to employment.
• Must possess or can obtain prior to employment a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) equivalent to a Class B with passenger “P” endorsement, school bus "S" endorsement, with no air brake restriction.
• Must possess or can obtain prior to employment a valid South Carolina School Bus Driver Certificate.
• Must possess a good knowledge of procedures and federal/state laws governing the safe operation of a school bus prior to employment.
• Must possess knowledge of, or the ability to accurately and quickly learn, local street and road systems.
• Must possess knowledge of, or the ability to accurately and quickly learn, how to properly secure a wheelchair, car seat, and other specialized equipment on a school bus.
• Must possess the ability to maintain student discipline and ensure that student behavior is not a distraction to safe driving.
• Must possess the ability to recognize and report any unsafe act or condition.
• Must remain in compliance federal/local regulations regarding the use of controlled substances and alcohol as applied to school bus drivers.
• Must be capable of working independently and possess the ability to understand and follow through on oral and written instructions.
• Must possess the ability to interact with students, parents, school faculty, and district staff in a positive and proper manner.

• Must be able to depress fully and maintain constant, unassisted pressure on the brake pedal for at least 60 seconds.
• Must be able to rapidly activate the manual service door release valve, push open the service door and exit the bus, starting from a seat belted position within 15 seconds.
• Must be able to move rapidly through the interior of the bus and exit from the rearmost floor-level emergency door, starting from a seat-belted position within 20 seconds.
• Must be able to drag individuals rapidly in a bus emergency. A 125 pound object must be dragged 30 feet in 30 seconds.

4. Work with students and or other staff members during student reflection period on issues such as behavior management and the prevention of undesirable behaviors that resulted in student being assigned to ISS.
5. Monitor all ISS assignments; provide encouragement and feedback to students, monitor tests, computer work and provide instructional assistance as appropriate.
6. Ensure students have security escorts to lavatory facilities.
7. Email teachers 24 hours in advance for work requests and complete student Work Completion Logs for all students assigned to the room.
8. Facilitate and arrange delivery of student lunches when necessary.
9. Refer behavior problems to Assistant Principals.

Education and Experience

JOB PURPOSE
Responsible for monitoring student behavior during meal time in the cafeteria and/or classroom. Assists with the cleanliness of the cafeteria, and assists with the flow of transitions during meal service times. Work is performed under the general supervision of the principal.

Position is responsible for the safety and care of all students including students with significant disabilities, special needs, and/or early childhood/kindergarten students while on a school bus. Reports to the Transportation Supervisor.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Help students to safely board and exit the bus.
 
Secures student in safety harness, car seat or wheelchair, when required.
 
Safely and properly secures wheelchairs, car seats, and other specialized equipment on the bus as needed.
 
Operates wheelchair lift and any other specialized equipment.
 
Monitors students with feeding tubes, tracheotomies, oxygen and other unique medical needs to ensure that everything is operating properly and is secured.
 
Reports any unusual or changed behavior to the driver, school staff and/or parents.
 
Ensures that early childhood and kindergarten students are released to an authorized person.
 
Must be able to learn about and adapt to different disabilities and/or special needs.

JOB PURPOSE
 
Under occasional supervision, performs technical, data processing and clerical duties of moderate variety and complexity to maintain accurate and up-to-date student records.  Provides assistance to supervisor, co-workers, students and the general public as required.  Reports to the Principal.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
 
Gathers and enters into computer all information that is essential to student information and record keeping, including but not limited to demographics, academics, classifications, report cards, schedules, funding information, homebound data, school lunch status, etc. using the automated school management system, PowerSchool; updates student files as needed.
 
Develops a timeline for teachers to record grades; enters grades into the computer including summer school, dual credit and virtual school grades; prints grade verifications for teachers, making corrections as marked; prints report cards and interim reports; calculates CRI, GPA and honor rolls; prepares report cards for distribution; prepares related reports for school, District and State Department of Education personnel as required.
 
Compiles information for and coordinates the preparation of registration booklets and forms, which include program and course descriptions, registration instructions, academic services information, registration calendars, and related information.
 
Informs administrators and guidance counselors of possible student credit deficiencies or unusual placements (e.g. progress report and report cards to include grade verification rosters, failing list of students by grade level to counselors, calculates point averages on graduating students, incoming seniors, and incoming juniors) for the purpose of student success.
 
Processes enrollment, transfers, withdrawal and summer withdrawal of students, coordination of course assignments and other details with teacher, administrators, and counselors.
 
Communicates information to parents/guardians related to PowerSchool parent portal.
 
Assists staff and teachers in using PowerSchool.
 
Coordinates the transfer of data between school and the District.
 
Monitors master schedule needs for students and teachers; oversees the preparation of printed schedules and ensures proper distribution; is a contributing member of the school scheduling committee.
 
Sets up course groups and screens for counselors to enter student requests for new school year.
 
Works on course requests counts and course sections for the subsequent school year. Sets master schedule.
 
Verifies pre-code data is correct for testing.
 
Closes out computer database for academic year and sets up new database for new academic year.
 
Enters all new students/ transcript data into historical data and enrolls new students in courses.
 
Maintains records for all grade changes.
 
Makes sure students requiring special education services are marked accordingly.
Responds to inquiries and requests for assistance in areas of responsibility.
 
Attends meetings, trainings, workshops, etc., as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills.
 
Performs related duties as required.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
Requires Associate’s degree, vocational technical degree or specialized training that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of two years of college education with emphasis in computer technology, data processing or a closely related field, supplemented by nine to twelve months of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must be able to enter computer data and type with speed and accuracy. Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
