    Job Title:              School Constable                                                                            
    Reports to:          Supervisor of Student Services & Equity Initiatives                                           
    Location:             Cape Henlopen School To Be Determined      
                                                          
    School Constable Description:  
    The School Constable is responsible for the safety and well-being of students, staff, volunteers, visitors and school facilities and assets at the assigned school location. Duties include the supervision and monitoring of students within and outside of the school building, enforcing appropriate student behavior, communicating with students regarding issues and/or behavior, escorting students and/or unauthorized visitors, assisting with traffic flow (includes but not limited to: stopping traffic for student crossing, and/or busses, cars, etc.), bus, recess and/or lunch duty, assisting with fire drills, school safety drills, other threats and the removal of disruptive students from the classroom.

    Required Qualifications: 

     
    • Must Hold State of Delaware Constable Certification or be eligible for Delaware Constable Certification
    • Must have at least 10 years of experience in a local, state or federal law enforcement agency, or be a current Constable with an active commission by the State of Delaware Board of Examiners of Constables*
    • Must successfully obtain a yearly Constable License from the State of Delaware
    • Must obtain Constable Training Certification from the State of Delaware
    • Must successfully pass a Criminal Background Check and Child Protection Registry
    • Must pass the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI)
    • Must successfully obtain a license to carry a firearm from the State of Delaware
    • Must successfully qualify for Firearms Certification for three qualifying shoots per year
    • Good/Positive Standing from the Law Enforcement Agency
    • Must possess the physical stamina required for patrolling District properties
    • Must possess or be willing to obtain First Aid and CPR Certification

     Expectations:
    • Constables for the remainder of the term must meet all requirements related to firearms training, and any additional requirements related to training.
    • The Board of Examiners may require commissioned Constables to receive additional training or education as it deems necessary.
    • Regular Attendance is an essential function of this position
    • In addition to duties during the school day, after-school and evening hours will also be required as needed throughout the year.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    Primary Duties
    • Follows the directions of the Supervisor of Student Services & Equity Initiatives, the Principal and/or Lead Constable
    • Serves as a member of the School Safety Committee, and assists with the School Safety Plan.
    • Coordinates efforts with school administration in the event of an actual emergency or school crisis.
    • ??Assists building administrators with fire drills, evacuation drills, and other crisis drills.
    • Assist building administrators with student incidents, included but not limited to bullying, fights, thefts, weapons, and substance abuse.
    • May assist building administrators with investigations as needed including searches and threat assessments.
    • Directs car-line traffic as needed, and assists with duties such as lunch and recess.
    • Monitors interior and exterior of the school building and campus before, during and after-school to ensure the safety and welfare of students, staff, volunteers and visitors and to ensure the security of the school facilities and assets. Is responsible for validating that exterior doors are secure throughout the school day.
    • Provides crowd control in hallways, parking lots, cafeteria, and playground or gathering areas and intercedes in fights and other disturbances.
    • Proactively watches and listens for potential disturbances, unauthorized visitors, and/or criminal activity.
    • Assesses danger and intervenes to halt or prevent disturbances and diffuse threatening or confrontational situations between individuals.
    • Maintains familiarity with the Student Code of Conduct and helps reinforce positive student behaviors.
    • Communicates with students and staff to discuss altercations, behavior and /or progress and to provide reinforcement of expected behavior.
    • Assist the School Resource Officer (SRO) and law enforcement agency when required
    • Escorts students to and from the office for disciplinary reasons and escorts unauthorized personnel from the school as needed.

      • Must possess a demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Delaware Law, Use of Deadly Force, Firearm Safety and Training.
      • First Aid and CPR Certification
      • Must be aware of relevant policies and procedures mandated by the State of DE including training in areas such as; Suicide Response, Child Abuse Prevention, Criminal Youth Gang, Teen Dating Violence, School Bullying Prevention, & Safe Positive Approach to Behavior.
      • Must have experience and a working knowledge of e-School and data management systems in addition to Google Docs to monitor and track student data.

      • Physical Abilities - While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and/or fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The job requires repetitive stooping, twisting, and bending. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk and sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by their job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties and responsibility of this job.     Constable Pay:    
    $40 Hour/180 days per school year/7.5 hrs. per day
    Extra Hours and Summer work required.
