TITLE: Assistant Director Special Education Services
QUALIFICATIONS:
Holds a valid appropriate Kentucky certificate for the position
Has three years experience in special education
Is thoroughly knowledgeable of IDEA as amended and of all related administrative regulations
Has demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with parents, staff, students and community
REPORTS TO: Director Special Education Services
JOB GOAL: To serve as a resource to staff and parents in the development and implementation of a district-wide comprehensive system of educational services. To assist in providing special education and related services to children with special needs. To serve as a resource to staff and parents regarding 504 eligible students.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Contribute to the development of the total district and school philosophy of education
Supervise all aspects of the Boone County Day Treatment Program
Utilize community resources to support programs and services for special education and 504 eligible students
Implement programs for improvement of instruction which builds a school-wide climate for learning
Facilitate the identification, evaluation, placement and provision of eligible services for private and parochial students within the Boone County District
Keep informed of all legal requirements governing special education and 504 eligibility
Assist in the implementation and monitoring of local, state and federal laws, regulations, policies and procedures regarding special education district-wide
Assist with the monitoring process of due process procedures and required documentation to meet federal and state laws and regulations related to special education and 504 eligibility
Assist in the compilation, maintenance and filing of all reports, records and other documentation legally required or administratively useful
Assist in the selection process for hiring of special education personnel
Review IEP’s and 504 Plans to determine appropriateness for individual students as needed
Enhance professional growth and development through literature, awareness of new research findings and improved techniques and through attendance at appropriate professional meetings, conferences and seminars at local, regional, state and national levels
Assist with district-wide monitoring of the special education program, curriculum, procedures and individual students’ needs and achievement, and collaborate with district and school personnel regarding findings and recommended changes
Assist in the development and dissemination of information to teachers, parents and the community
Assist with the development, implementation and evaluation of pre-service and in-service training programs for special education personnel
Encourage the development, publication and use of new instructional materials by special education personnel
Assist in the management of the records retention process for special education and 504 eligible students
Evaluate certified and classified itinerant special education personnel
Maintain a district-wide program of visitation to schools
Observe teachers in their classrooms upon request of principals and offer assistance for the enhancement of the teaching-learning situation
Assist with the supervision of related services and itinerant personnel such as educational diagnosticians, special education itinerant teachers, assistive technology staff, and occupational, physical and speech therapists
Assist in the development and expenditure control of IDEA budget
Perform other duties consistent with the position assigned as may be requested by the supervisor
