SUMMARY: To create a climate of health and well being in the schools by serving as an integral part of a team that collaborates to provide the best educational opportunity for each student.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participate in planning programs that eliminate or minimize health problems of students that may interfere with learning. Participate in identifying and reporting environmental health and safety hazards (current or potential) for students and staff.
Initiates, maintains, and annually reviews student health records (pupil health record, emergency card, immunization record, and reports of physical examination.
Supervises paraprofessionals used in the school health setting in all the schools in the corporation.
Assist with training and education programs for paraprofessional in proper techniques for medical treatments or procedures and keeps documentation on file.
Develops and conducts inservice training for all employees on Universal Precautions on a yearly basis and keeps documentation of training on file.
Identifies health problems of students through health assessment, health histories, review of health records, and screening programs.
Implements all screening programs mandated by Indiana Law.
Communicates current health problems, needs, and concerns of students to their parents and appropriate staff.
Develops Individualizes Health Plan (IHP), with specific goals, objectives, and interventions based o student health needs.
Participates on the child study team, assists in the identification of students with disabilities, interprets health factors pertinent to the student’s disability, and develops implements, and evaluates the health component of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
Develops and maintains a system for providing first aid and emergency care.
Administers medications and treatments to students per physician’s order and parent authorization.
Provides health counseling to students to assist them in making decisions regarding their health and health behaviors.
Assist students and parents in identifying and utilizing available and appropriate community health resources.
Facilitates the attainment of student’s health needs by providing support to students and their families.
Provides educational opportunities for students to assist them in developing self=care skills to deal with health problems.
Provide consultation and assistance to teachers in their planning, implementation, and evaluation of health education units,
Provides inservice education opportunities for student for school staff on health-related issues.
Collaborates with community agencies, health professionals, and school staff to identify the health needs (current and potential) of children and youth to facilitate school and community planning and intervention.
Attend seminars and workshops to enhance professional development.
Other duties that may be assigned by the Director of Health Services or principal.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Baccalaureate Degree preferred. Associates degree nurses or licensed practical nurses may be employed as a school nurse when supervised by a nurse with a Baccalaureate degree.
Five (5) years experience working in a primary health care setting with a focus on the pediatric population and a minimum of two years of experience in school nursing preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, correspondences, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to apply general mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community, and ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.
