Title: Head Coach
Selected by: Board of School Trustees by Recommendation of the Superintendent, School Principal, and/or Athletic Director

Reports to: Athletic Director, Principals and/or appropriate administrative personnel
Supervises: All professional, paraprofessional, administrative, and support personnel attached to the school.
SUMMARY: To provide effective adult supervision, guidance in the development of required skills, and a positive exemplar of adult behavior to students participating in the sport assigned to the coach.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for the conduct of the sport program within the guidelines, rules, and policies established by the athletic department, the school, the conference and the IHSAA, and in harmony with the mission and goals of Seymour High School.
Adhere to a highly efficient and technically sound program of injury prevention and follow up.
Maintain appropriate appearance.
Ensure own regular and prompt attendance at practices, events, and contests.
Supervise athletes and students until released to parents, guardians per school guidelines.
Assume direct responsibility for the development, coordination and supervision of the designated sports program grade K-12 by:
Organizing and providing leadership to all assistant coaches with regard to program philosophy, individual roles, conditioning and fundamentals, drills, offense and defense sets.
Coaching the varsity team.
Assigning and directing duties of assistant coaches 9-12.
Providing guidance to middle school coaches.
Designing and directing an elementary instructional program if approved by the Board.
Creating open lines of communication with the athletic director and building principals, and holding regular meetings with assistants and staff.
Develop and implement effective procedures for the try out and selection of team members in a manner that provides equal opportunity and fair criteria for selection.
Insure that all students trying out for a team has necessary forms and applications on file prior to the beginning of practice including the following:
Current physical examination
Parent consent
Family or school insurance
Academic eligibility clearance
Athletic Transfer clearance
Owl card forms
Establish written standards of conduct for team members and managers including the topics listed below, and take steps to insure that all participants understand the importance of the rules in the context of team goals, commitment, and integrity.
The consumption and/or use of alcohol, nicotine, and other controlled substances.
The use of performance enhancing substances.
Attendance at practice contests.
Comportment prior to and after practices and contests.
Behavior toward opponents, players, coaches and contest officials.
Personal appearance including dress on day of games and for away contests.
Impose sanctions on, and discipline players who do not adhere to the team rules and regulations in a manner that:
Emphasize a primary concern for the athlete as a person, student, and member of society,
Seeks to gain the cooperation of the student and insure that the inappropriate behavior is not repeated.
Provides parents with the opportunity to assist in the resolving behavior problems.
Whenever possible, provides the student athlete and his/her parents with a clear formal warning including the corrective steps that must be taken to prevent permanent removal from the team.
Involve the athletic director (and building principal as necessary) in any decision to permanently remove an athlete or manager from the team.
Take appropriate actions to insure that parents of participants are informed of the rules and standards of conduct, the role they are expected to play, and procedures to follow to arrange for a conference with a member of the coaching staff.
Develop and implement effective procedures for communicating changes in schedules concerning dates, time changes, location and level of play to team members, parents, and the media.
Develop and implement effective procedures for the supervision and control of student athletes at practices and scheduled events, including severe weather plans, injury protocol, and concussion protocol.
Insure that the welfare of the student is the highest priority in the response and treatment of athletic injuries. Make sure that every injury is properly taken care of including the reporting and/or referral of injured athletes to the school athletic trainer for evaluation and fully cooperating with the recommendation of the athletic trainer and medical personnel regarding treatment and participation.
Cooperate with the recommendation and decisions of the parent/guardian and athletic trainer regarding the rehabilitation of injured athletes including:
Determining the type of treatment.
Determining the length of treatment.
Scheduling treatment.
The use of rehabilitation equipment.
Responsibility for supervising the student during treatments involving heat lamps, moist heat packs, whirlpool and rehabilitation equipment.
Develop and implement effective procedures for distributing and accounting for uniforms, maintaining equipment and annual inventories.
Communicate equipment and facility needs to the athletic director in a timely manner in order to permit necessary decision-making, budget planning and appropriation of funds.
Cooperate with the athletic director in arranging schedules, hiring of officials, the utilization of facilities for practices, arrangements for transportation and providing eligibility and roster information for tournaments.
Cooperate with local and state media organizations with regard to interviews, providing publicity materials and promoting the program, and insure public comments and conversations with media personnel.
Communicate the philosophy, purposes and practices of the department, school and corporation.
Does not violate confidentiality principles and policies.
Respects the worth and dignity of students and school personnel and does not blame contest outcomes on the performance of individuals or contest officials.
Assume direct responsibility for securing equipment, locker rooms, offices (and, when appropriate, the outside entrances to facilities) at the conclusion of practice and contests.
Develop and implement effective procedures for keeping track of team and individual statistics, individual award winners and special awards.
Attend all regularly scheduled meetings and called meetings of head coaches
Serve on committees or attend conference or meetings as requested by the athletic director or building principal.
Lead by example by exemplifying good moral conduct.
Promote good public relations for the School Corporation and community.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily with reasonable accommodation. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, licensure and ability required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Prefer valid teaching certificate and degree program with a major or minor in physical education or equivalent hours and courses in coaching theory and/or successful athletic experiences.
Knowledge of First Aid, CPR, and sports medicine also preferred.
Administrative Experience preferred
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, parents and community members. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions with the media.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to apply general mathematical concepts to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
KNOWLEDGE BASE:
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to the extra-curricular program; ability to plan and implement activities/lessons based on district and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
