POSITION OVERVIEW: Bus Assistant (0.75 FTE), School Year

Under general supervision, the Bus Assistant’s responsibility is to provide support within the student transportation services area with specific responsibilities for assisting special education students during transport to and from school and/or special activities; ensuring orderly entering and leaving of bus patrons; maintaining seat chart of riders; and ensuring the safety and sanitation of assigned vehicles.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Assists bus driver in handling emergency situations until the driver can take over.
• Assists special education students and other passengers in loading and unloading safely from buses during normal transport and emergency situations.
• Monitors students with special needs until released to teacher, instructional assistant, parent, etc. to ensure the safe transportation of all passengers.
• Assists bus driver with pre-trip safety inspection and cleaning the bus to ensure bus is maintained in a safe and sanitary operating condition.
• Assists with conducting monthly emergency evacuation drills to ensure the efficiency of procedures and compliance.
• Completes walk-throughs to check for students or articles left behind at the end of each trip (e.g. clothing, bags, prescriptions, etc).
• Instructs students for the purpose of enforcing rules/regulations and maintaining student safety and well-being.
• Reports observations and/or incidents (e.g. discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.) to appropriate personnel for follow-up action.
• Secures students and/or their equipment (e.g. restraints, checks wheel chair tie downs, seat belts, opens ramp, etc.) to ensure their safety and well-being.
• May attend in person meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions.
• Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Ability to adhere to safety practices and administer first aid.
• Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.
• Knowledge of operating equipment used in transporting special needs students.
• Ability to speak clearly and have excellent communication.
• Ability to work outside regular business hours.
• Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
• Knowledge of health standards and hazards, state regulations, and laws pertaining to the operation of school buses and child behavior.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum of one year of related experience.

CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• CPR/First Aid Certification

• Light physical effort may be required.

POSITION OVERVIEW: Bus Driver Trainee, School Year (1.0 FTE)

Portland Public Schools is looking for a dedicated, reliable person who is interested in becoming career school bus drivers. We will provide 30 hours per week of employment, full-time benefits, and on-the-job training so that you are fully prepared to obtain your Class B Commercial Driver’s License within six months of hire.

During your six months as a Bus Driver Trainee, you will split your time between providing Bus Assistant services, providing Van Driver services, and learning how to inspect, pre-trip, maintain, and safely operate a 15-ton school bus filled with precious cargo. Once you obtain a bus driver’s license, you will transition into a career bus driver position, and you will be assigned your own route. Overtime pay for career bus drivers—field trips, athletic trips, etc.—is usually plentiful.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
• As a Bus Assistant, you will support special education students during transport to and from school and/or special activities; you will ensure orderly entering and leaving of all bus patrons; you will maintain assigned seats of riders; and you will ensure the safety and sanitation of assigned vehicles.
• As a Van Driver, you will be responsible for the proper pick-up, transport, and discharge of students along assigned routes and on sanctioned athletic, field, or other special trips; you will also inspect, perform minor maintenance, and clean your assigned vehicle.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
• Holds valid Maine driver’s license.
• Twenty-one (21) years of age, and has had license for a minimum of 3 years.
• Prior experience as a van driver is preferred.
• 6 months to get a valid Class B CDL with passenger and student endorsement.

POSITION OVERVIEW: Bus Driver (40 Hours), School Year

Under general supervision, the selected candidate will operate a school bus in transporting children to and from schools. Employees in this class are responsible for following an assigned route and schedule while safely and efficiently operating a school bus. Employees in this position will *at all times* operate their assigned school bus obeying all applicable federal, state, and local traffic laws, and enforcing the Portland Public Schools Student Bus Conduct Code. Employees in this position will also be responsible for inspecting, performing minor maintenance on, and cleaning their assigned vehicle.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:
• High School or GED diploma required.
• Two to four years of driving experience; prior experience as a school bus driver preferred.
• Successful experience interacting with children.
• Twenty-one (21) years of age, and having held operator’s license for three years.
• Other combinations of applicable education, training and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• Ability to meet prescribed pre-employment and annual physical examination requirements.
• Ability to complete pre- and post-trip bus inspections. Ability to lift heavy objects 50 lb minimum.
• Must be able to sit for long period of time in the bus driver’s seat, reach the steering wheel and pedals, and wear the seat belt properly every day.

CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License, with P and S endorsements and no air brake restrictions.
• Certification in First aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) procedures highly desirable.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Must pass USDOT pre-employment physical examination, criminal background check, and drug and alcohol testing.
• Ability to work overtime to complete required bus routes/trips. No more than two current points on the driving record and a satisfactory past driving record.
•  Must furnish a driving record of the previous three (3) years free of the following:
  • No convictions for a felony
  •  No convictions for operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • No more than two moving violations in the past twenty-four (24) months
• Ability to pass a supervised road test.
• Ability to provide two (2) personal references.
