JOB TITLE: School Bus Monitor/Aides

SUMMARY: Monitors conduct of students on school bus to maintain discipline and safety.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following:
1. Directs loading of students on bus to prevent congestion and unsafe conditions.
2. Rides school bus to prevent altercations between students and damage to bus.
3. Assumes role as assistant to the bus driver.
4. Participates in school bus safety drills.
5. Performs such other tasks as may from time to time be assigned.
6. Assists in the loading/unloading of special needs students.
7. Secures special needs students in car restraints, seat belts, etc.
8. Makes appropriate use of hand-held radio.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively communicate with students and present information in one-on-one and small group situations to the Director of Transportation and his/her secretary, principals, faculty, and other employees of the school corporation. Ability to communicate with parents, particularly those with special needs students.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written and oral form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must possess a Red Cross First Aid Certificate and be certified in CPR.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES: The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and is sufficient to cause marked distractions or possible hearing loss. There are no environmental hazards indicated for this position.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Wages and benefits to be determined by the School Board.
EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated by the Director of Transportation in accordance with School Board policy.
