SUMMARY:  Serves as a classroom teacher who holds the necessary state certification for the job assignment and who creates a program and environment favorable to learning and the personal growth of each student by performing the following duties:
 
REPORTS TO: Building principal
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following:
 
1. Implements the Norwell Community Schools approved curriculum
   1. Teaches the curriculum based on the Indiana Academic Content Standards
   2. Teaches mandatory curriculum required by state statue
   3. Aligns student assessment and classroom instruction with the approved curriculum
   4. Uses instructional materials approved by the school corporation and other supplementary materials consistent with the Indiana Academic Content Standards to facilitate the instruction of his/her content area curriculum
   5. Previews all instructional materials, including assigned Internet sites, to determine their educational value and age appropriateness before using them
   6. Plans instruction based upon thorough knowledge of subject matter, the students, the values of the community, and curricular standards and benchmarks
      2. Focuses on continuous student achievement a.   Uses research-based instructional strategies that promote students’ development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.

b.   Uses an understanding of individual and group learning needs, styles, interests, and behavior to create an effective learning environment
c.   Develops and implements a variety of formal and informal assessment instruments that serve as an accurate means of measuring continuous student achievement
d.   Uses student achievement data to determine the most appropriate instructional strategies to promote student achievement
e.   Communicates with guidance personnel in an effort to resolve academic, behavioral, and personal problems that students might experience that would inhibit their academic success
f.    Informs parents verbally or in writing when academic or behavioral problems surface that would inhibit their child’s progress
g.   Is available for parent conferences during regularly scheduled school-wide parent teacher conferences or at a time convenient for the teacher and the parent or guardian
h.   Collaborates with grade-level, team or department members; other staff members; and the community in order to ensure continuous school improvement
 
3. Maintains effective classroom management
a.   Exercises disciplinary tools that are outlined in the student and faculty handbooks
b.   Administers student discipline in a respectful manner (refrains from yelling, using profanity) that does not demean students
c.   Refrains from physically touching students when administering discipline
 
4.   Fulfills professional responsibilities
a.   Maintains accurate student records as required by the building principal
b.   Uses appropriate technology to maintain, receive, and transmit information
c.   Maintains confidentiality, as defined by FERPA, in terms of student behavior and academic progress
d.   Utilizes teacher preparation time for lesson planning, grading, or other tasks that are related to instruction
e.   Maintains up-to-date lesson plans that include learner objectives, instructional strategies, assessments, and standards taught in all subject areas
f.    Provides written lesson plans, seating charts, or other pertinent information to substitute teachers
g.   Attends regularly scheduled faculty, grade-level, team, department, or committee meetings
h.   Communicates problems or sensitive situations to the building principal
i.    Submits reports, progress reports, grades and other information by requested deadlines
j.    Issues and collects textbooks and supplemental materials and maintains accurate records
k.   Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect, students, equipment, materials, and facilities
l.    Ensures that all equipment is secured when not in use and that dangerous and/or expensive equipment is secured where it is not accessible to students
m.  Cooperates with the custodial staff to maintain a classroom that is clean and suitable for learning
n.   Supervises students in the hallways during passing time, in restrooms, at assemblies, at pep rallies, and assumes additional supervision when assigned during the teacher day. Teachers may, on occasion, have some after school duties that require their supervision.
o.   Dresses in a professional manner
p.   Is on time to school, meetings, and in the classroom or other areas of responsibility
q.   Adheres to all corporation and school policies and procedures
 
5.   Continues to grow professionally
1. Participates in regularly scheduled staff development activities
2. Attends workshops or conferences that provide additional training
3. Continues to grow professionally by keeping abreast on educational innovations and research-based instructional strategies.
 
6. Co-Curricular Positions
The essential functions of teachers who hold co-curricular positions will include those listed above as well as the following:
Agriculture:
      a.   Promotes, sponsors, and supervises all FFA activities
2. Works with students during the summer on agriculture- related activities such as Indiana State FFA convention, Wells County 4-H Fair FFA Exhibit, and the Indiana State Fair FFA Exhibit
3. Demonstrates necessary skills, such as live stock judging, welding,  and judging contests, to implement the agriculture curriculum
Music, Choir, and/or Band:
1. Plans and supervises educational musical events that may take place outside of the regular school day or on weekends
2. Takes responsibility for supervising students on overnight stays related to musical performances and seeks School Board approval in a timely manner for overnight or out-of-state trips.
3. Works with building principal to plan the educational music program for the school year, to determine the number of  musical events and schedule these throughout the school year, and to make appropriate arrangements for facilities and equipment.
 
 
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Reason­able accommo­dations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
 
            EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
            Valid Indiana teaching license.
 
            LANGUAGE SKILLS:
            Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of children, parents, employees, and members of the School Board.
 
            MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
            Ability to work with mathematical concepts and use multiple measures of student data to determine student progress. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
 
           
            REASONING ABILITY:
            Ability to analyze and solve problems and to interpret and implement a variety of instructions and/or strategies in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
 
            OTHER SKILLS:
            Ability to utilize equipment, technology, and work aids appropriate to the functions of a classroom teacher.

Job Description
SUMMARY:  Provides a comprehensive counseling program for students in grades K-5 and specifically provides services to meet the needs of assigned students; consults with teachers, staff, and parents to enhance their effectiveness in helping students; and provides support to other school educational programs.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following:

1.Continues to develop and implement the elementary school counseling curriculum.      
      a.     Conducts learning activities in classroom settings.
      b.     Consults with and/or is a resource person to teachers to facilitate the infusion of learning activities into the regular education curriculum.
      c.     Participates in developing the guidance curriculum as needed.
2.  Guides groups and individual students through the development of educational, personal,
     social, and career plans.
3.  Counsels small groups and individual students.
     a.     Conducts structured, goal-oriented counseling sessions in systematic response to identified needs of individuals and small groups of students.     
4.  Consults with teachers, staff, and parents regarding the developmental needs of students.
     a.     Participates in in-service programs for school personnel.
     b.     Participates in staff meetings.
     c.     Participates in conferences with teachers, students, and parents.
     d.    Conducts and provides opportunities for parent education programs.
     e.     Assists families with school-related issues.
     f.     Consults with administration and teaching staff.
5.  Makes student referrals to appropriate community resources.
     a.     Consults and coordinates with district resources including, but not limited to, school nurses, administrators, social workers, and special education providers.
     b.     Consults and coordinates with community-based service agencies, physicians, counseling agencies, and psychologists.
6.  Participates in, coordinates, or conducts guidance and counseling activities which contribute to the effective operation of the school.
     a.     Interprets group test results.
     b.     Establishes effective liaisons with the various instructional departments and community resources.
     c.     Works with other school staff in the appropriate placement of students.
     d.    Participates in the implementation of the district testing program.
     e.     Provides opportunities for seeking college financial aid.
7.  Plans and evaluates the counseling program.
     a.     Annually reviews and modifies with other staff and administration the counseling program content based on student needs.
     b.     Establishes the counseling department calendar.
     c.     Evaluates the counseling learning activities as they are implemented.
     d.    Completes an annual counseling program evaluation.
8.  Pursues continuous professional growth.
     a.     Attends state and local staff development offerings.
     b.     Joins professional counseling associations.
     c.     Reads professional journals.
     d.    Attends relevant workshops and conferences sponsored by professional organizations.
     e.     Maintains requirements for state licensure.
9.  Maintains student records.
     a.     Creates, updates, and distributes student progress and grade reports.
     b.     Regularly updates student permanent record files.
     c.     Generates and distributes student schedules.
     d.    Protects confidentiality as required by FERPA
10. Performs such other tasks as may from time to time be assigned by the principal and/or Superintendent.
