Norman Public Schools Student Support Specialist Job Description:
Under the direction of the Director of Counseling and Advocacy and in collaboration with site administrators, and paid by the Opioid Abatement Grant, the Student Support Specialist will provide student and family support primarily to students who have violated the Substance Use police and have been suspended from school. This position provides individual and group support to ensure the transition back to school is successful and assists in removing barriers to accessing the education of students as well as providing access to education and mental health support. This position is grant funded and is renewable depending on the quality of the candidate and success of the program.
Credentials: High School Diploma or GED. Preferred 2 years post secondary education and demonstrated participation in advocacy and/or personal knowledge in recovery or is working toward or completed credentialing as a Peer Recovery Support Specialist. Reports to: Director of Counseling/Site Administration
Contract: 175 days

Essential Job Functions:
Direct support to students who have violated the substance policy to ensure a successful transition back to school. Ensure completion of and support students in ISS with Everfi Prescription Drug Safety course.
Ensure completion of and support of student academic work while in ISS and after transitioning back to the classroom setting.
Ensure the students are attending AIS (Addiction Information Series) courses and completing them.
Attend weekly AIS classes.
Connect students with school staff that can assist them with academic or mental health/social emotional needs.
Advocate for students with staff.
Ensure the student completes an assessment if required and follows the recommendations.
Communicates appropriately with program and school staff, keeping documentation of student progress and giving updates.
Complete weekly and bi-weekly check-ins with students to support their efforts in navigating their return to school.
Document all services provided, indirectly and directly, to students and their families.
Assist students with personal and academic goals.
Utilize and teach problem solving techniques with students.
Other Duties and Responsibilities: Participates in weekly team meetings and staffing.
Keeps credentials current or attended professional development and training.
Performs other duties as assigned that are allowable by grant regulations.
Maintains student confidentiality and FERPA

Successful performance of the job requires keen people skills and to handle problems and provide information and technical assistance as requested. A successful candidate must be able to collaborate well with others, be a self starter and work well in a team environment. It requires complying with safety guidelines and policies to reduce accidents or injuries to staff or to students. It requires following school dress standards, proper attendance or leave policies and accountability for time and effort. Initiative and effective problem solving are critical to the success of the position.
