    JOB DESCRIPTION
     
    Position:              Grounds/ General Maintenance
     
    General Job Description:                                                             
    Provide general maintenance of facilities and grounds.
     
    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Work cooperatively with colleagues, supervisors, and administrators.
    • Demonstrate ethical behavior.
    • Engage in self-development.
    • Follow District policies and administrative rules and regulations.
    • Maintain behavior appropriate to performing and accomplishing assigned duties.
    • Know what to do to successfully complete assigned work.
    • Project overall concern for personal appearance as it relates to job performance.
    • Carry out assignments and instructions from supervisor(s) in a competent and efficient manner.
    • Perform assignments in such a manner so as not to interrupt the classroom learning environment.
    • Work in a safe manner with personal safety and the safety of others as the number one priority.
    • Communicate with supervisor and co-workers.
    • Plan and execute work efficiently within the work order system.
    • Build, install, inspect, and repair facilities and grounds within the district as needed.
    • Maintain grounds in safe condition with a grass covering where possible; landscaping, leveling, and associated tasks dealing with the grounds surrounding school facilities.
    • Plan and execute schedule for mowing, watering and fertilizing athletic practice and playing fields.
    • Maintain/repair/replace all irrigation needs: sprinkler heads, control boxes, valves, water lines, etc.
    Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Perform manual physical labor, lifting and moving materials, furniture, equipment, and supplies.
    • Maintain assigned uniforms, work vehicle(s), equipment, tools and shop area in operable, safe and attractive status.
    • Account for supplies, materials, and equipment as required.
    • Complete records and reports as required in a timely manner.
    • Maintain facilities security.
    • Operate heavy equipment such as front-end loader, backhoe, bobcat, forklift, etc. in a safe manner.
    • Perform any other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor and/or Superintendent.
    Qualifications:
    • High school diploma or GED.
    • Valid New Mexico driver’s license appropriate for operating vehicles of the size required of this position.
    • Experience in operating heavy equipment.
    • Knowledge and ability to operate welding equipment, drilling equipment, saws, and typical metal working equipment.
    • Ability to operate vehicles and machinery necessary in this position.
    • Demonstrate knowledge sufficient to be successful in accomplishing the duties of this position.
    • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.
    Physical Requirements:
    • Physical ability to do manual work for 8 hours per day.
    • Standing, driving, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, lifting, climbing ladders. Lifting from floor to mid-thigh maximum (50 pounds) occasionally. Lifting from mid-thigh to shoulder maximum (50 pounds) occasionally. Lifting from shoulder to overhead (40 pounds) occasionally, carrying (50 pounds) maximum occasionally. Lifting more than 50 pounds of dead weight should be done by at least two people.
    • Work overhead, in tight areas, off of ladders, at floor level (on knees).
    • Hand/eye coordination, normal range of sight.
    • Ability to move furniture.
    • Handling heavy plows and attachments for tractors and yard equipment.
    • Fingering or otherwise working with fingers.
    Safety and Health Requirements:
    • Proper posture is required to eliminate acute and chronic low back pain.
    • Wear protective devices such as eyewear, non-skid pads on shoes, steel toe shoes, as job conditions demand.
    • Read, understand, and observe all precautions and proper methods of use on all chemicals, equipment, tools and materials.
    • Complete all required training.
    • Proper methods in working with chemicals and chemically treated surfaces. ? Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions.
    Equipment/Material Handled:
    Hand tools, equipment, chemicals, ladders, platforms, tractors, trucks, fork-lifts, graders and related earth and materials particular to this trade skill. Work vehicle, material handling equipment.

    Work Environment:
    The work environment varies greatly in the place of work from working in a shop alone to working in school facilities with large numbers of people. Conditions range from working outside in the extreme heat of the summer, to comfortable buildings, to working outside in very cold temperatures. Work schedules will be assigned to best meet the needs of the students and may be altered at any time to accommodate the students. Overtime will be assigned on an as needed basis to take care of emergency situations. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. After hours work may be required. Must be able to work under stressful conditions.
