General Summary: |
Under general supervision, teachers of Computer Science/STEM education (formerly referred to as “industrial arts technology”) will facilitate engaging, hands-on learning experiences that foster creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving in elementary students. The instructor will design and implement lessons that integrate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) concepts, computer science concepts, and design thinking to explore real-world challenges through project-based learning while developing essential 21st-century skills. The rigorous nature of this hands-on curriculum equips students to apply what they learn in their core classes with an equal emphasis in technology and engineering. |
Essential Functions: |
- Supports and upholds the mission, vision and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One.
- Effectively interacts, communicates and collaborates with students, parents, colleagues and other stakeholders to foster student learning.
- Establishes a safe, supportive, positive and productive learning environment for all students; maintains positive behavior support and classroom management systems.
- Teaches Computer Science/STEM concepts and skills from the engineering design process and areas represented in the South Carolina Career and Technology Education career clusters. Areas such as robotics, computer science, design, model building, etc. are included.
- Implements instruction and instructional activities aligned horizontally and vertically in accordance with state and national Computer Science/STEM standards.
- Develops practical problem solving skills related to the materials and processes of the industry.
- Selects, requests, and maintains an inventory of instructional aides, technology tools, equipment, and supplies needed for daily activities.
- Demonstrates a variety of 21st Century teaching skills to foster independent, creative, critical thinkers and problem solvers.
- Designs and facilitates engaging, high level, sophisticated learning experiences and applications appropriate to prepare students for a 21st century global, knowledge-based society.
- Demonstrates and evaluates the effectiveness of both formative and summative assessments; analyzes assessment data in relation to student learning and develops instructional strategies to close the learning and performance gap; evaluates contributions in group projects.
- Meets with teachers, parents, administrators and school counselors as needed to discuss student performance, activities, etc.; issues reports in accordance with school board policy to inform parents of students’ progress.
- Prepares various records and forms such as lesson plans, daily and weekly activity plans, assessments, material requisitions, competency forms, discipline reports, etc.
- Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
- Effectively uses personal computing devices and software applications for the management of student records, instructional efficiency, and professional development.
- Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Education/Work Experience: |
- Bachelor’s degree in science, technology, engineering and math or related discipline with previous student teaching experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities OR Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood or Elementary Education
- Valid South Carolina teaching certification

Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the school district that pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge of school policies, procedures, and operations. Ability to demonstrate proper maintenance, safe operation, and utilization of equipment, materials, and supplies used in daily activities. Ability to maintain high standards of accuracy in exercising duties. Ability to anticipate work to be completed and to complete work without the need for direct supervision. Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee and student records and information. Ability to interact and communicate effectively and professionally with supervisors, co-workers, teachers, students, and the general public. |
Working Conditions: |
Conducts duties in a classroom and laboratory environment with routine exposure to noise from equipment, electricity, dusts and fumes. Requires ability to perform duties requiring constant attention working with students. Physical demands are restricted to work requiring occasional lifting/moving of items up to fifty pounds. Occasional local travel is required; no overnight travel required. Requires operation of general office and Computer Science/STEM equipment. |
Responsibility: |
Supervises students in classrooms and other instructional settings. Responsible for maintenance and inventory of equipment; responsible for reporting equipment malfunctions. |
Evaluation: |
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the school board’s policy on evaluation of certified personnel. |
