General Summary |
Under general supervision instructs students in vocal and music skills for the development and enhancement of rhythm, sight-reading, music theory and vocal abilities. Assists in other school programs as assigned. |
Essential Functions |
- Supports and upholds the mission, vision and strategic goals of Lexington County School District One.
- Effectively interacts, communicates and collaborates with students, parents, colleagues and other stakeholders to foster student learning.
- Establishes a safe, supportive, positive and productive learning environment for all students; supervises students in classroom activities and in other areas as assigned; maintains positive behavior support and classroom management systems.
- Demonstrates and teaches concepts and skills in music; develops and enhances students’ vocal abilities in solo, ensemble and choir situations through tone quality, diction, harmony, rhythm, sight-reading, theory and keyboarding training.
- Prepares students for solo, stage and ensemble musical performances and recitals; organizes student recitals, performances and talent shows as assigned.
- Utilizes musical instruments in classroom instruction and concert activities.
- Demonstrates a variety of 21st century teaching skills to foster independent, creative, critical thinkers and problem solvers.
- Designs and facilitates engaging, high level, sophisticated learning experiences and applications.
- Demonstrates and evaluates the effectiveness of both formative and summative assessments; monitors student progression; provides constructive critiques; evaluates contributions in ensembles.
- Collaborates with school and district personnel to evaluate effectiveness of curriculum and make suggestions for improvement.
- Cooperates with school administrators in providing musical programs for school productions, graduation ceremonies, civic functions, etc.
- Inventories music, musical instruments and music equipment.
- Networks with school personnel regarding scheduling issues.
- Prepares various records and forms such as lesson plans, daily and weekly activity plans, assessments, material requisitions, discipline reports, etc.
- Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
- Organizes classrooms and other settings for daily instruction.
- Selects, requests, and maintains an inventory of instructional aides, technology tools, equipment, and supplies needed for daily activities; provides for safe storage and proper use of all materials, equipment and tools.
- Effectively uses personal computing devices and software applications for the management of student records, instructional efficiency, and professional development.
- Meets with parents, administrators and school counselors as needed to discuss student performance, social and emotional needs, behavior, and personal and academic goals and expectations, etc.; issues reports in accordance with school board policy to inform parents/guardians of students’ progress; suggests interventions as appropriate.
- Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Education/Work Experience |
- Bachelor’s degree in music education or related area of discipline with previous student teaching experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
- Valid South Carolina teaching certification

Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the school district that pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge of school policies, procedures, and operations. Ability to demonstrate proper maintenance, safe operation, and utilization of equipment, materials, and supplies used in daily activities. Ability to maintain high standards of accuracy in exercising duties. Ability to anticipate work to be completed and to complete work without the need for direct supervision. Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee and student records and information. Ability to interact and communicate effectively and professionally with supervisors, co-workers, teachers, students, and the general public. |
Working Conditions |
Conducts duties in classroom and concert environments and on field studies with no significant exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Requires constant attention working with students. Physical demands are restricted to classroom work requiring occasional lifting/moving of items up to twenty-five pounds; moves, pushes, and rolls pianos and other heavy equipment. Occasional travel is required; limited overnight travel required. |
Responsibility |
Responsible for supervision of students in classrooms, field studies and other instructional settings. Responsible for classroom materials and supplies budget (if applicable). Responsible for maintenance and inventory of equipment; responsible for reporting equipment malfunctions and safety issues. |
Evaluation |
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the school board’s policy on evaluation of certified personnel. |
