Primary Purpose:
Provide special education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to match student ability levels. Work in self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned.
 
Provide support to all district teachers and campuses with regard to student behavior. Have a working knowledge of how to work with students with challenging behaviors, Completing FBAs, ARD paperwork, and writing BIPs. Must have specific understanding of how to work with students with autism.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s degree from accredited university
Master’s degree from accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsements
Administrative certification (preferred)
CPI Trainer certification (preferred or willing to obtain)
 
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation
Knowledge of how to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs
Effective communication skills
Experience:
3 years experience as a classroom teacher
3 years experience in leadership role
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
 
Instructional Strategies
 
1. Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to develop IEP through the ARD Committee process for each student assigned.
2. Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required.
3. Conduct assessment of student learning styles. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
4. Present subject matter effectively and according to guidelines established by IEP. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media including technology to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned.
5. Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula as needed and assist special education students in regular classes with assignments.
6. Participate in ARD Committee meetings on a regular basis.
7. Participate in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional media.
8. Willingness to travel across the district to work with students from all campuses when behavior concerns are occurring
9. Provide a structured learning environment to meet the needs of all students
10. Organize and coordinate CPI training for all required district employees as necessary
11. Support teachers with classroom management, behavior management, and FBAs
 
Student Growth and Development
 
12. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
13. Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, and feeding of students as stated in IEP.
14. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by campus principal.
15. Consult district and outside resource people regarding education, social, medical, and personal needs of students.
 
Classroom Management and Organization
 
16. Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
17. Manage student behavior and administer discipline including intervening in crisis situations and physically restraining students as necessary according to IEP.
18. Consult with classroom teachers regarding management of student behavior according to IEP.
19. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
20. Plan and assign the work of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) and oversee completion.
 
Other
 
21. Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
22. Maintain professional relationships with parents, students, and colleagues.
23. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
24. Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
25. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
26. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
27. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
 
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Direct the work of special education teachers, regular education teachers, life skills &/or BAU teachers and instructional aide(s).

Primary Purpose:
Assess the educational, learning styles, and program needs of students referred to special education services. Work cooperatively with the Director of Special Education and campus personnel to provide the most appropriate instructional programs for students with disabilities.

Assessment
 
1. Select and administer formal and informal assessments to determine student eligibility for special education services according to federal and Texas Education Agency regulations.
2. Compile and evaluate comprehensive student information including classroom observations; personal interviews with the student, teachers(s), parents and others; and relevant assessment data from student’s cumulative folder. Consult with parents and teacher concerning the educational needs of students and interpretation of assessment data.
3. Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist with interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and development of Individual Education Plans (IEP) for students according to district procedures.
 
Consultation
 
4. Present staff development training in assigned schools to assist school personnel in identifying and understanding students with disabilities.

Program Management
 
6. Schedules or assist in scheduling ARD meetings and assist with establishing an agenda, setting the time allotted for the meeting, and establishing a set of guidelines for the meeting.
7. Facilitate ARD committee discussions using facilitation techniques to help the committee members communicate and collaborate effectively. Ensure each committee member has an opportunity to participate, resolve disagreements that arise, and keep the committee on task.
8. Ensure federal and state timelines are met with respect to functions of the ARD committee meetings.
9. Implement and maintain systematic communication between special and general education personnel with respect to ARD meetings and decisions, Individual Education Plans (IEPs), student accommodations, and instructional concerns and progress.
10. Support student achievement ensuring delivery of special education curriculum and instruction according to the IEP of individual students.
11. Ensure student progress is evaluated on a regular, systematic basis, and findings are used to make decisions to improve program effectiveness as it relates to specific student needs. Offer and implement changes when warranted.
12. Collaborate with teacher to address student achievement deficiencies focusing resources, materials, and technology to promote satisfactory classroom performance. Encourage and support the development of innovative instructional programs.
13. Assist in monitoring the instructional process to ensure program activities are aligned with desired outcomes and IEP.
