Basic Function: The school nurse serves as the health care expert in the school building, providing health care services including assessment, intervention, and referral to support the needs of students and staff. The school nurse works as a member of the health care team to manage acute and chronic health conditions supporting access to primary care, preventative services, counseling for health promotion, and communicable disease control measures. The school nurse serves as an advocate addressing the physical, mental, emotional and social health needs of students with an understanding of normal growth and development. The school nurse uses their knowledge to develop a plan of care based on the National Association of School Nurses Framework for School Nursing Practice. The school nurse must demonstrate the ability to organize and manage time effectively and apply clinical knowledge and skills to make independent nursing judgments and deliver safe and effective care. Qualifications: - Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
- Licensed registered nurse in the State of Delaware.
- Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Three years supervised clinical experience preferably with children and youth.
- Ability to complete 90 hours of required training approved by the Department of Education consisting of school nursing health education, testing and screening, counseling and guidance and introduction to exceptional children.
| Essential Functions:- Utilizes clinical knowledge and skills to provide healthcare including emergency and first aid to students and staff.
- Assists in developing, implementing and evaluating procedures and programs to assess the health and development of students.
- Provides communicable disease information, prevention and surveillance.
- Provides health education, consultation, and assistance to students, school staff, and families.
- Maintains records and aligns nursing practice with state regulations.
- Coordinates, conducts, and provides referrals and follow-up on state mandated screenings and health assessments.
- Implements a plan of care for students with acute or chronic health conditions, and disabilities.
- Provides daily medications and treatments to students within regulatory standards.
- Participates in interdisciplinary team meetings to identify students with health needs that are impacting the students’ ability to learn.
- Implements and evaluates the health component of the individual education plan (IEP) and/or 504 accommodation plans.
- Maintains clinical records within professional and legal boundaries and school guidelines. Documents assessments, interventions, medications and treatments using the school district electronic health record system.
- Maintains a well-equipped health office with adequate and appropriate supplies.
- Participation and attendance in daily huddles, professional development and quarterly nurse meetings with district nursing staff.
- Performs other appropriate assignments not enumerated above as assigned by the building administrator(s).
