Job Goal: The Reading Specialist will perform specific, targeted instruction in the area of Reading to supplement and support instruction in the regular classroom. This instruction will be provided to individual students or small group settings who have been identified as needing specific and more intensive reading instruction. The Reading Specialist will provide consistent, effective interventions for students and will create an environment favorable to student learning and personal growth; establish effective rapport with students; motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge; establish positive relationships with other staff members. |
Job Qualifications: - Must have Delaware Certification for Reading Specialist.
- Mastery of the necessary content knowledge and skills to successfully teach assigned content area(s) and grade level(s) and deliver exceptional standards-based instruction in the assigned content area(s) and grade level(s) that ensures academic growth for all students, including those with special needs;
- Outstanding ability to motivate and build relationships with students and parents to promote student achievement and strengthen community partnerships;
- Exceptional classroom management, organization, planning, instructional delivery, leadership, and technical skills; and the ability to utilize differentiated instructional methods to engage students in positive learning experiences;
- Proficiency in automated student information systems for progress and grade reporting and class work documentation and ability to integrate technology into instructional delivery;

Essential Functions: - Apply the Science of Reading research to to strengthen students decoding and comprehension through explicit instruction and the interweaving of strategies, self-monitoring, fluency practice, and knowledge building.
- Create and maintain a classroom environment that encourages all students to be engaged and work toward meeting literacy goals;
- Communicate high expectations for all students;
- Use assessment tools and progress monitoring date to make informed decisions around differentiate preparation and planning for the diverse needs of all learners;
- Maintain accurate, thorough records of student achievement and behavioral performance; complete progress and grade reports as scheduled using automated systems;
- Embrace creative opportunities to exercise professional judgment and customize instruction based on student needs;
- Communicate regularly with middle school reading specialist colleagues and K-12 Supervisor to align practices and data collection;
- Prepare and plan following the scope and sequence from the evidence-based reading curriculum. Instruction is goal oriented, and based on diagnostic needs of the studentsl;
- Promote a high rate of student interest and provide prompt and specific feedback in a constructive manner with opportunities for active participation; demonstrate fairness and consistency in dealing with students; and speak and write clearly, correctly, and at an appropriate level for student understanding;
- Carefully plan for substitute teachers when unable to attend school and relate lessons to the state content standards in the core content areas as well as in specific content areas;
- Comply with policies, regulations, and procedures of the school district and building; communicate effectively with parents and work collaboratively with staff;
- Display high-level professional conduct and image at all times; establish and maintain an acceptable attendance record; and participate in extracurricular activities and/or leadership roles outside the classroom;
- Continue to grow as an educator through professional learning in specific areas of interest.
- Perform other duties and/or complete special projects as assigned.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, sit, use hands to the finger(s), handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; use fingers to type and write; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; taste or smell. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close, distance, and color vision, peripheral and depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 40 pounds. If lifting more than this weight is necessary, the assistance of a second person is required. The physical demands of this position will also include the ability of the individual to perform all of the essential functions and related responsibilities of the position with or without reasonable accommodations. |
