Job Goal: To ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable transportation of all students by effectively managing the district’s transportation operations. The Supervisor of Transportation will work to optimize services while maintaining fiscal responsibility and fostering a culture of safety and customer service. |
Job Summary: The Supervisor of Transportation provides strategic oversight of the district’s transportation operations, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant pupil transportation. This role includes overseeing bus routing, fleet maintenance, fiscal management, scheduling, compliance with federal, state, and district regulations, and collective bargaining agreements. Coordination and collaboration with school administrators, families, and transportation staff are essential. Strong leadership, organizational, and relationship-management skills are also necessary for this role. Job Qualifications:- Bachelor’s degree in a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum five years of progressive leadership experience, preferably in school leadership, transportation, or operations management. Prior experience in a unionized environment is preferred.
- Knowledge of local, state, and national safety standards, laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to pupil transportation.
- Knowledge of effective methods of program development, implementation, and evaluation of methods, practices, and techniques.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision of staff.
- Skills and ability in organizational leadership, time management, task prioritization, and recordkeeping.
- Skills demonstrating a high level of integrity, commitment, and work ethic.
- Ability to provide transportation staff with in-service/professional development opportunities to increase proficiency in their fields of expertise.
- Ability to work well under pressure and use sound judgment, including appropriate handling of confidential matters.
- Ability to analyze complex situations and synthesize diverse information.
- Ability to provide guidance and direction to staff and promote a team environment.

- Proficiency in productivity software, including word processing, spreadsheets, and email required. Proficient in transportation management systems such as school bus routing systems and other office automation tools related to job responsibilities preferred.
- Clear criminal background checks and drug screenings are required prior to employment with the District.
- Have or willingness to obtain within 90 days after hire, a Commercial Driver’s License - CDL (Class B) with passenger and school bus endorsement required. A current and valid Delaware driver’s license is also required.
- Alternatives to the above qualifications that may be deemed, appropriate, applicable, acceptable, and in alignment with State required qualifications.

Essential Functions: - Oversee and manage daily transportation operations to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of students for instructional programs, extracurricular activities, and special events.
- Supervise and evaluate transportation personnel, fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and professional growth.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local transportation regulations, as well as district policies and procedures.
- Develop and manage the transportation budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility, cost-effectiveness, and alignment with district goals.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with parents, schools, and district departments, providing timely and effective communication regarding transportation services.
- Coordinate and implement training programs for transportation staff, including professional development, safety training, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Develop and maintain safety standards in accordance with federal and state regulations, insurance requirements, and industry best practices.
- Oversee vehicle maintenance and acquisition, ensuring all district-owned transportation equipment is properly maintained and meets operational and safety standards.
- Analyze and optimize transportation routes and schedules to improve efficiency and minimize costs while maintaining service reliability.
- Assist in policy development and system upgrades to enhance transportation operations and improve service delivery.
- Investigate and respond to transportation-related incidents, including accidents, student behavior concerns, employee relations matters and service complaints, ensuring appropriate resolution.
- Advise district leadership on transportation-related decisions, including school closures or delays due to inclement weather or road hazards.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the effective operation of the Transportation Department and the district.
- Oversee the transportation related operations and events that may occur before/after normal business hours and on weekends, as applicable.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, sit, use hands to the finger(s), handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, use fingers to type and/or write; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; taste or smell. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close, distance, and color vision, peripheral and depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds. If lifting in excess of this weight is necessary, the assistance of a second person is required. The physical demands of this position will also include the ability of the individual to perform all of the essential functions and related responsibilities of the position with or without reasonable accommodations. |
Work Environment: The Supervisor of Transportation operates in an office environment but is also required to conduct on-site visits to schools, district roads, and event locations. The role may involve evening or weekend work during emergencies or school events. |
