SUMMARY
A parent educator implements the Parents as Teachers model, emphasizing parent child interaction, development – centered parenting, and family well – being in their work with families. Utilizing the Parents as Teachers Foundational Curricula in culturally sensitive ways, the parent educator partners, facilitates, and reflects with families.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Engage in recruitment activities
• Complete an initial and annual family centered and developmental assessments including health records
• Develop, monitor, and review goals with each family
• Ensuring that the materials and all equipment is clean, well-maintained, and safe
• Provide group connections to give families an opportunity to build social connections with one another
• Plan, provide, and document personal visits focused on parent-child interaction, development-centered parenting, and family well being
• Maintaining and scheduling weekly and monthly activities
• Participating in on-going in-service and education development opportunities, and participating in the ongoing development and evaluation of the program’s goals and objectives
• Planning and implementing activities that meet the physical, intellectual, emotional and social needs of their students and families
• Connect families to resources that help them reach their goals and address their needs
• Help parents and children transition to other services as needed
• Visit homes to partner with parent’s skills
• Keep accurate records of time with parents by utilizing the required data management system, Visit Tracker
• Attend mandated training for the program
• Maintain and submit all required family and program documentation in a timely manner
• Participate in at least two hours of reflective supervision monthly and at least two hours of staff meetings monthly
• Obtain competency-based professional development and renew parent educator certification annually
• Participate in continuous quality improvement

QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor’s or four-year degree in early childhood education, social work, health, psychology, or a related field is recommended. A minimum of a high school diploma or GED, with at least two years’ experience with young children and families.
2. A commitment to diversity, equality, inclusion, and accessibility.
3. Demonstrated ability to work with various groups of people in homes and an educational environment.
4. Ability to establish rapport with families and empower them by building on their strengths.
5. Ability to use initiative and innovation in planning and implementing programs and procedures.
6. Computer skills, including online research, email, internet, and record keeping.
7. The parent educator must complete the Parents as Teachers Foundational and Model implementation trainings before delivering Parents as Teachers services. If necessary, the district will send qualified and hired candidates to Parents as Teachers two-week training.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Assess difficulties of referred students through appropriate testing and diagnostic practices.
2. Consult with school personnel and parents in the process of identifying students with academic and social-emotional problems.
3. Assist school personnel and parents in prescribing remediation plans and techniques for students with learning and social-emotional problems.
4. Participate in diagnostic and multidisciplinary conferences for students needing remediation, referral to outside agencies, of special placement within the system.
5. Administer and interpret test results related to placement of students in special education services.

QUALIFICATIONS:           Licensed registered nurse in the State of Illinois eligible to serve in a public school with at least one year of full time experience as a registered nurse within the last 5 years.
 
REPORTS TO:                     Director of Special Services
 
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  The primary function of the registered nurse is to promote and maintain the highest standard of student health within the school setting.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 1. Assess and evaluate the health status of each student in order to make a nursing diagnosis and establish a health plan.
2. Interpret the health status and medical findings to the student, parent and staff responsible for the child.
3. Provide information and training to staff and administration on the medical condition of students within the building.
4. Guide those persons responsible for the student’s health toward appropriate health/medical resources and provide medical counseling where appropriate.
5. Recommend to the administration modifications in the educational program for a student due to changes in the student’s health or medical status.
6. Serve as a health consultant and resource person by providing current information from medical nursing and related fields.
7. Serve as liaison between the parents, school and community in health matters.
8. Participate in educational meetings (including IEP and Section 504) to provide health information as it pertains to the academic and social growth of the student.
9. Develop goals for the students with special health care needs.
10. Teach the students skills for self-care and assist in modifying the environment to allow the student use of self-care skills.
11. Provide a nursing diagnosis and evaluation as needed on health and hygiene issues.
12. Assist in establishing procedures and practices consistent with current approved nursing strategies for assessment and intervention that will foster a climate of health and well being in the schools.
13. Perform health screenings (ie. Visual, auditory, and scoliosis).
14. Observe students, as needed, to detect health problems/issues.
15. Maintain cumulative health records on all students.
16. Inform the building principal when state law or local policy indicates exclusion or readmission of students with infectious or contagious diseases.
17. Maintain confidentiality of student and family health information.
18. Assume responsibility to render emergency care to a student or staff member when injured or ill.
19. Assist school personnel in establishing and maintaining sanitary conditions and standards in the school.
20. Review and recommend revisions in school nursing policies and procedures.
 21. Participate in in-service training programs and obtain mandated CEUs/workshop hours within established guidelines.
22. Perform other assigned duties and responsibilities as directed by administration.
