Description:
Seeking a Mechanic to serve the School City of Hobart. Position available Immediately.

Position Purpose:
Reporting directly to the Head Mechanic and Director of Transportation, to perform a variety of skilled-level repairs, overhaul and maintenance of buses, passenger vehicles, trucks and a variety of other gasoline and diesel powered motorized equipment; and to do other related work as required.  

Essential Functions:
• Follows and maintains knowledge of district policies and procedures related to Transportation.
• Performs mechanical, electrical and other maintenance and repair on buses and other district vehicles.
• Welds, machines and fabricates parts.
• Installs safety equipment on vehicles; regularly inspects all bus safety systems.
• Maintains repair and maintenance records.
• Follows all safety practices related to the job and the department.
• Inspects all types of pupil transportation vehicles for compliance with Indiana state requirements.
• Keep shop, vehicles, and tools clean.
• Maintain appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
• Comply with applicable district, local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations.
• Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff and community.
• Be on call 24 hours per day with a thirty (30) minute response time.
• Drive bus to pick up students as needed.
• Plow snow, use snow blower, and spread salt manually.
• Vacation encourage to be used when school is not in session.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience:
• High school diploma or GED
• Two year vocational training in automotive mechanics preferred
• Two years of experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment.
Certifications (Preferred):
• Valid Indiana Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with the following endorsements:
  • General Knowledge
  • Air Brake
  • School Bus
  • Public Passenger
• Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certified or possess similar certification
Specialized Skills:
• Gasoline & Diesel Engines
• Other Small Engines
• Electronics: Vehicle, GPS, Camera
• Air Brake Equipped Vehicles
• Air Conditioning Systems
• Knowledge of IC & Cummins diagnostic software
• Knowledge of State of Indiana School Bus Inspection Guidelines
Additional Requirements:
• Must be prepared and able to drive all vehicles when necessary
• Clean driving record and ability to pass pre-employment and random drug testing
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
• The employee must exert 100 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. This work may involve ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps to or from a height of 15 feet, and will involve walking or standing for extended periods.
• The employee is required to regularly use various tools and mechanical equipment.
• The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts.
• The employee may be exposed to severe environmental conditions including chemicals, fumes, outdoor weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
Terms of Employment:      
• FLSA: Non-exempt
• Full Time, Hourly Position
• Salary rate dependent upon experience
