The Orientation and Mobility Specialist is responsible for providing direct services to students with IEPs.  The services are related to orientation and mobility for students of the visually impaired.  The O&M Specialist is to ensure that students' IEP are current in regards to services and that the goals and objectives are monitored for progress.
 
O&M Specialist is complete all needed documents to meet compliance and participate in all required meetings, trainings, and complete other duties, as assigned.
 
ORIENTATION AND MOBILITY SPECIALISTS, PRE K-12 Licensure Requirements
 
Possess certification from the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and
Visually Impaired

Language Skills
Proficiency in expressive and receptive American Sign Language and written English. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret content in assigned area/grade level. Ability to explain foundations/advanced concepts in American Sign Language in order to support student learning. Ability to write reports, correspondence, and Individual Education Plans. Ability to effectively present information and respond to
questions from students and parents.
American Sign Language
Advanced American Sign Language skills at hire are required. The applicant must be proficient in receptive and expressive American Sign Language and able to adjust communication to match students' language and communication needs. Certificates and Licenses

          McKinley County Graduates (HS): $20,000
          NM Graduates (HS or College) or Within Navajo Nation Boundaries: $18,500

Signing Incentives
Relocation incentive for all new teachers, counselors and administrators will be paid in full on the first paycheck of the school year.
All other incentives for teachers, and counselors will be paid out over the course of two school years in four installments. Payment will be made ¼ in December of the first contract year, ¼ in May of the first contract year, ¼ in December of the second contract year and ¼ in May of the second contract year. The incentive will be prorated for hires made after the official work calendar start date but prior to December 31, 2025. Any hires made on or after December 31, 2025, will not be eligible to receive the signing incentives listed above. Failure to complete the terms of the employment contract in either/both of the two school years will result in the forfeiture of the entire signing incentive and relocation incentive. Signing Incentives are effective February 3, 2025.
 
Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible for the signing incentives, you must be a new employee who was not employed in any position or certified capacity by GMCS during the 2024-2025 school year. For the relocation incentive, you cannot have received a relocation incentive within the last two (2) years to qualify for the Relocation Incentive for SY 25-26.
• Exception: Employees moving job class level up to new position (EA to Teacher or Teacher to Principal)

• Serve as a resource to facilitate groups and presentations on pertinent issues

Qualifications: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities in qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
 
Experience:  Two years of responsible counseling experience; one year of career counseling is desirable.
 
Education:  Master's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in an accredited program in school counseling, guidance & counseling, psychology, sociology, or a related field.  Student Success Advisor pathway available with a bachelor’s degree.  Candidates must meet the criteria for one of the licensure pathways outlined below for a School Counselor:
 
SCHOOL COUNSELOR, PRE K-12 
PATHWAY 1
• Bachelor’s and master’s Degree (earned from a regionally accredited college/university)
• Minimum of 36-42 semester hours in a School Counselor program including a practicum in a school setting
• Passage of the New Mexico Teacher Assessment (NMTA) Content Knowledge Assessment (CKA) in School Counseling
PATHWAY 2
• Possess an LPC or LPCC license issued by the NM Counseling & Therapy Practice Board
• 6 semester hours of graduate credit in school counseling
• Passage of the New Mexico Teacher Assessment (NMTA) Content Knowledge Assessment (CKA) in School Counseling
PATHWAY 3
• Possess a certificate issued by the National Board for Certified Counselors
• Passage of the New Mexico Teacher Assessment (NMTA) Content Knowledge Assessment (CKA) in School Counseling

• Student Success Advisor five-year internship license available, if the candidate is highly qualified.

          NM Graduates (HS or College) or Within Navajo Nation Boundaries: $18,500

Signing Incentives
Relocation incentive for all new teachers, counselors and administrators will be paid in full on the first paycheck of the school year.
All other incentives for teachers, and counselors will be paid out over the course of two school years in four installments. Payment will be made ¼ in December of the first contract year, ¼ in May of the first contract year, ¼ in December of the second contract year and ¼ in May of the second contract year. The incentive will be prorated for hires made after the official work calendar start date but prior to December 31, 2025. Any hires made on or after December 31, 2025, will not be eligible to receive the signing incentives listed above. Failure to complete the terms of the employment contract in either/both of the two school years will result in the forfeiture of the entire signing incentive and relocation incentive. Signing Incentives are effective February 3, 2025.
 
Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible for the signing incentives, you must be a new employee who was not employed in any position or certified capacity by GMCS during the 2024-2025 school year. For the relocation incentive, you cannot have received a relocation incentive within the last two (2) years to qualify for the Relocation Incentive for SY 25-26.
• Exception: Employees moving job class level up to new position (EA to Teacher or Teacher to Principal)
 
Administration will provide processes and administrative clarification/decision for specific situations that involve these incentives. This includes creating rules to support the incentives' successful implementation.
