    CONTROLLER

    DEFINITION
    The Controller is responsible for a wide range of professional accounting activities including but not limited to: monitoring and maintaining the general ledger; reconciling multiple accounts; preparation financial statements and financial reports; preparation and reports for various audits and compliance related reports and forms; and to perform other professional accounting duties as required.
    SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
    Receives directions from the Fiscal Services Director.
    Potential to exercise direct supervision over supervisory, professional, technical and clerical staff.
    ESSENTIAL FUNCTION STATEMENTSEssential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Maintenance of the General Ledger
    • Reviews of all Budget related transactions
    • Reconcile or verify monthly the District Bank Accounts
    • Reviews quarterly reconciliations of 941 reporting and wage basis accumulations  
    • Prepare quarterly State Department of Education reports
    • Prepares annual IRS required reports and forms
    • Prepares quarterly and semi-annually related reports due to the State.
    • Prepare a variety of reports including New Mexico Unemployment Compensation, Federal Water Tax and Worker’s Compensation reports
    • Prepare annual financial statements and reports.
    • Reviews fixed assets quarterly and prepares the annual fixed asset reconciliation
    • Works collaboratively to create projections for budget planning process.
    • Reviews and submits budget journal entries and requests for reimbursement
    • Provides on-line banking support including cash transfers, research, reports and payables.
    • Creates monthly financial or data reports as requested
    • Participates no less than quarterly in Budget review meetings with Fiscal Program Coordinators
    • Monitors and oversees the Audit of Student Activity Funds

    Knowledge of:
    Generally accepted accounting principles and procedures.
    Principles and practices of budgeting.
    Principles and practices of financial auditing.
    Modern office procedures, methods and equipment including computers.
    Financial research and report preparation methods and techniques.
    Automated accounting and financial management systems.
    Ability to:
    Develop and implement accounting system modifications.
    Analyze and interpret complex financial and accounting records.
    Prepare a variety of complex financial statements, reports and analysis.
    Utilize computer equipment and software to produce complex reports, informational items, tracking systems and related documents.
    Examine and verify a wide variety of financial documents and reports.
    Operate a computer including a variety of software programs.
    Work independently in the absence of supervisors.
    Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
    Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
    Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
    Maintain mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communication with others.
    Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties.
    Experience and Training Guidelines
    Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
    Training:
    Equivalent to a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in accounting or a related field. CPA preferred.
    Experience:
    Three years of increasingly responsible professional accounting experience, preferably in a school  district setting.
    License or Certificate
    Possession of, or ability to obtain, any required License from the State of New Mexico Department of Education for the position.
    Work Environment: Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality.  Interruptions of work are routine.  Flexibility and patience are required.  Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignment without direct supervision.  After hour work may be required.
    Terms of Employment: Salary and work calendar established yearly by the district.
