    Job Purpose and Focus
     

    Promotes the safety and welfare of students and assists in maintaining a positive school environment.  Assists the classroom teacher in achieving teaching objectives and supporting the classroom environment by working with individual students and groups.
     
    Essential Qualifications and Requirements   
    • Meets the state definition of “Highly Qualified”
    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Certification in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) preferred
    • Demonstrates human relations skills, especially in working with students
    • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, staff, administration, and parents
    • Ability to follow directions of certified staff
    • Ability to supervise students in structured and unstructured situations
    • Possession of excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills
    • Knowledge of activities performed by lead teacher
    • Knowledge of daily routines of the classroom
    • General knowledge of student handbook rules
    • General knowledge of procedures to follow in the event of an emergency
    • Some knowledge of the curriculum for the grade
    • Basic reading, writing and computation skills
    • Experience with groups of children
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding student issues
    • Good physical and emotional health
     
     
    Essential Functions and Representative Duties
    • Assist teachers with instructional activities such as:
      • Reading to children
      • Assisting children in library
      • Writing the dictation given by young children
      • Helping children locate and use materials
      • Encouraging safety habits in work and play
      • Assisting children to understand and follow directions and rules
      • Encouraging children to work independently
      • Listening to children
      • Assisting small groups of children in various subject areas under the supervision of the classroom teacher
    • Reinforcing skills taught by the classroom teacher to small and large groups
    • Helping children individually with special assignments and academic problems
    • Lifting, transferring students in wheelchairs
    • Assisting with student physical and hygiene needs such diapering, toileting, and catheterization; administering medication (training provided as needed)
    • Attend appropriate meetings and professional development training as requested in accordance with district procedures
    • Assist teachers in working with student behavior issues
    • Assist with lunch, snack, and cleanup routines
    • Keep accurate records/data of student progress and /or behavior assessments
    • Respond to parents and assists them when first-hand information or involvement is necessary under the direction of the principal
    • Perform other duties as assigned
     
    Terms of Employment
     

    Wages and benefits as outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Board of Education.  These positions are for 29.5 hours a week and do not include healthcare.  The rate of pay ranges from $8.15/hour to $14.97/hour based on experience.
     
    Work Environment
     

    Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs, etc. Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
     
    Evaluation/Performance Measurements
     

    Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel.  Criteria for performance include but are not limited to:
     
    • Attendance record
    • Data utilization
    • Human interactions
    • Participation in specific training or workshop opportunities
    • Demonstration of interpersonal, time, conflict, and stress management skills
    • Production and efficiency related to job duties
