• Acts as a liaison between families and school staff when problems arise and supports families by identifying and connecting them to district and community resources. 
• Maintain documentation of activities, LEAP and student logs, and prepare reports as required.  
• Performs other duties as required that is directed at supporting student’s attendance in school.

Qualifications and Abilities:
• Fluent in Spanish and/or Portuguese.
• Has good communication and problem-solving skills.
• Has flexibility skills of being able to work in multiple schools during the week.
• Demonstrated proficiency in the district’s school-family partnership policy and regulation documents.
• Knowledge of child growth and development and learning strategies that foster educational growth. 
• Understanding of the developmental process of developing family-school partnerships. 
• Understand class and cultural backgrounds for families and the community and respect ethnic, cultural and language diversity.

IN SCHOOL SUSPENSION CLASSROOM PARAEDUCATOR

BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Principal, supervises students assigned to an in-school suspension classroom for behavior reasons, provides instruction and assistance regarding assignments as appropriate.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
In addition to the duties and responsibilities of a para-educator, the ISS paraeducator will be required to monitor students assigned to the in-school suspension room, maintain accurate disciplinary records, provide cafeteria prepared lunches to ISS students, obtain class work from regular teacher for ISS students, and work cooperatively with the  Administrators.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS – Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
• Supervise a group of students assigned to an In-School Suspension classroom for behavioral reasons.
• Prepare and maintain various records and reports regarding the In-School Suspension program, including student names, attendance, grade, date, periods sent to classroom, student’s teacher and offense.
• Distribute assignments to students; provide instruction and assistance as appropriate.
• Monitor completion of work; provide feedback to students; provide instruction and assistance as needed.
• Organize and maintain files of instructional materials for student use as needed.

Purpose Statement
Across our schools, we currently serve the needs of over 1,700 students who have been identified with special needs that require particular time and attention from our educational support teams.  As our student population continues to grow, we look for candidates who are eager and excited to work with all of our students across all classrooms.  Successful candidates should be enthusiastic, caring, and committed to the success of our students.  Our Special Education Tutors are specifically hired as a part of an individual student's support team that has been created by the Special Education and Related Services teams, in order to provide the best educational outcomes for these students who come with a wide assortment of needs.  Our Tutors are assigned to a small group of students, often 2 or 3 and sometimes 1 student, in order to support the work of the teacher in the classroom.  Our Tutors must be able to follow specific instructions from our teachers, while applying great attention to confidentiality, and must exercise discretion with students, colleagues and families or caregivers.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Work with individual students or small groups of students under the supervision of a certified teacher to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
• Collect data on student progress.
• Evidence of the ability to work cooperatively with staff.

PURPOSE:
To serve as an integral member of the instructional team to provide services to individual students who participate in the English Language Learners ("ELL") Program provided by the Danbury Public Schools. This can include services in the ESL Program, Bilingual Program or other programs designed to serve the needs of our non-English Home Language families.
 
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Work with individual students or small groups of students under the supervision of a certified teacher to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
• Record achievements and diagnostic tests, under the direction of the teacher for individual students or groups of students.
• Assist the teacher in devising learning experiences to reinforcing skills based on the language developmental level of the individual students.
• May work in a particular classroom assignment or work in a variety of classrooms throughout the day, based on programmatic needs.
• Assist the teacher in the handling, operation and care of equipment used in the classroom, including media and technology
• Help students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by teacher
• Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, field trips, and in other non-classroom activities.
• Check notebooks, correct papers and supervise testing and make-up work, as assigned by the teacher.
• Serve as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
• Assist the teacher in drill work, large group reading or storytelling.
• Exhibits a clear understanding of techniques and strategies for working with ELL students and uses them when applicable
• Alert the teacher(s) regarding any problem or special information related to an individual student.
• Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and sensitivity of information about students as is expected of a certified teacher.
• Participate in professional development training programs, as required.
• Perform related duties as appropriate for the position as assigned by the Director of ESL and World Languages.
• Guide independent study, enrichment work and remedial work set and assigned by the teacher.
• Distribute and collect workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction as needed.
• Assist in providing a well-organized, smoothly functioning school environment.
• Assists certified teacher in the maintenance of appropriate documentation as required by federal law on ELLs.
• Works with students in small group or individually on mastering concepts and vocabulary in the target language
• Approach student proficiency in English with patience and support
• Perform other related duties, as assigned

  KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
• Must possess or be willing to acquire the skills necessary to work productively with children.
• Demonstrated ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions effectively.
• Must exhibit good judgment, patience, tact and courtesy.
• Physical condition commensurate with the demands of, at a minimum, the essential functions of the position, particularly when assigned to kindergarten positions
• Exhibits proficiency in basic reading, math, writing, and speaking English and preferably Spanish
• Preference given to individuals who are fluent in Spanish or other targeted language, based upon openings
• Utilizes and maintains ethical practices for confidential communication about students.
 MINIMUM QUALITIFCATIONS:
