1. Current enrollment in an approved graduate level program from an accredited university/college leading to licensure for the position of School Social Worker (Type 73)
2. Completed the pre-requisite coursework necessary to begin internship
3. Eligibility for ISBE School Social Work Intern status

School Social Work Intern

REPORTS TO:
Social Workers, PPS Directors, Special Education Administrators
GENERAL DUTIES: - To assist in maintaining high quality services for staff, students, parents, and community members who utilize the services assigned to this position.
- To assist immediate supervisor in carrying out the duties assigned to that position.
- To strive for positive and collegial public relations with the staff, students, parents and community members.
- To maintain confidentiality in all areas assigned to this position.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate must be invested in improving the school educational experience of those students with identified or suspected social-emotional or behavioral difficulties and disabilities through a program of social-emotional diagnosis and therapy. Candidates for this internship will work closely with their school social work supervisor to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to provide comprehensive social work services to support students' ongoing social-emotional health. As part of the internship experience, interns will provide direct service to students through individual and group counseling; conduct social-developmental studies, and monitor student progress toward IEP and BIP goals. Interns will work to design, implement, and evaluate interventions to ensure student success within the high school they are placed and within district programs. The individual must be currently enrolled in an approved graduate level program from an accredited university/college leading to licensure for the position of School Social Worker. The candidate must also be eligible for the ISBE School Social Worker Intern status.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: - Possess the ability to speak clearly and be understood by others.
- Possess the ability to write legibly.
- Possess the ability and have received the training to effectively operate a computer, using a PC platform, at a level which would allow a candidate to pass a test administered for this position.
- Possess the ability to demonstrate effective telephone skills and the ability to operate a modern phone system.
- Demonstrate the ability to calmly address individuals using the services offered by the position.
- Possess an acceptable attendance history in prior positions and demonstrate the ability to meet the daily attendance requirements of the designated position.
- Possess a successful work history, supported by references, in a work setting similar to the position for which the candidate is applying.
- Demonstrate the ability to practice confidentiality with sensitive information.
- Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills to assist in establishing a positive climate in the work environment.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interns will be supervised by district social workers and will have an opportunity to access and gain hands-on experience with a wide range of student populations and disabilities.- Provide school social work services, which address the psychosocial needs of students and families that directly address areas of identified need.
- Provide school based interventions, including but not limited to:
- Individual and group counseling
- Crisis intervention
- Case management
- Collaboration with school-based staff and administration
- Maintains case records for the purpose of documenting activities any complying with mandated and legal requirements;
- Participate in systems-based social work involving the student, family, and school personnel in identifying needs, establishing an intervention plan, and collaboration and connecting with community agencies to provide wrap-around services and support;
- Serve as a mental health professional on building RtI teams at the high school level;
- Provide social-emotional and behavioral screening and problem solving;
- Report writing and preparation/completion of IEP paperwork;
- Complete case study evaluations in the area of social-emotional status, adaptive behavior and developmental status;
- Crisis Management Team and Traumatic Response Team member with building psychologists, social workers, counselors, and administration;
- Collaboration and communication with parents, local community health, and social welfare agencies;
- Other duties relating to the school social work field, as assigned by school social workers, PPS directors, and special education administration.

Interns will have the ability to attend professional development trainings and conferences provided by or paid for by the district, opportunities to present to staff on best practices with tiered interventions and opportunities to regularly meet and problem solve with current district social workers.
