JOB TITLE: Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Evaluates and treats students determined eligible for special education services with various diagnoses to determine eligibility for Occupational Therapy. Treatment can be administered in small groups and individually and can include consultation with school staff. Implements Occupational Therapy treatment plan, to include a variety of activities and exercises to correlate with each child's needs. Helps each child to improve visual-motor, sensory, fine-motor, visual-perceptual skills, daily living, and self-care, so that they can be as successful and independent as possible, in the school setting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Plans and provides direct and indirect services consistent with occupational therapy goals contained in students’ Individual Education Plans (IEP) determined by the IEP/504 team..
Evaluate student progress and make recommendations regarding occupational therapy services in the areas of fine motor development, perceptual development, self-help, and sensory processing.
Performs internal and external educational functions which may include consultation with teachers and school staff and periodic in-service presentations.
Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by state and federal law, District policies, and administrative regulations.
Actively participates in school district meetings, as required. Attends and serves on school, District, and professional organizations. Provides for personal professional growth through on-going programs,
seminars, conferences, and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher learning.
Travels between locations where students require services.
Participates in school or District staff development programs as assigned by Director of Special Education.
Presents a positive image of Clarendon County School District at all times.
Willingly performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Maintain licensing with South Carolina Labor, Licensing, and Regulation and compliance with National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge:
Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures and activities of the school District which pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge of goal setting and evaluation techniques. Knowledge in the principles of supervision and management. Knowledge of occupational therapy theories, models of practice, principles and evidenced based practice to guide intervention decisions. Knowledge of the records, forms and reports which must be prepared and maintained. Knowledge of the proper maintenance of equipment, materials and supplies used in daily activities. Knowledge of the materials and information which must be prepared for instructional activities. Knowledge of principles, methods, and objectives of occupational therapy treatment, services, techniques of skeletal anatomy, neuromuscular function and dysfunction; kinesiology and occupational therapy modalities.
Skills/Effort:
Ability to observe and assess fine motor development, perceptual development, self-help, oral motor development and sensory processing. Ability to operate general office equipment in the performance of daily activities. Ability to communicate effectively with students and their parents through written and oral communication, District staff, and all other groups involved in the activities of the job.
Additional Physical, Cognitive, and Other Requirements:
Duties involve both sedentary work as well standing, walking, bending, and lifting. Must be able to talk, read and hear, and effectively perceive and exchange information in a variety of oral, written and/or printed formats. Must be able to record and exchange data, and follow or deliver detailed verbal or written instructions. Duties require the ability to prepare various records and reports and enter data in correct form including proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Must be able to compare and analyze information in numeric or symbolic form, and appropriately process color, depth and spatial relationships. Must have sufficient hand, eye and foot coordination to use or operate standard office equipment, items, and supplies. Duties of the job require routine keyboard operations and the frequent use of a computer monitor and related equipment. Duties may involve the pushing, pulling and/or lifting of items weighing up to 20 pounds and the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis.
Working Conditions:
School environment with some potential exposure to environmental conditions. Requires the ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties that require constant attention and working with students. Physical demands are restricted to school activities that require the movement or lifting of items weighing up to 25 pounds. Occasional local travel required; no overnight travel is required. Job requires the operation of standard office equipment.
